Filter Fabric 200 to 1000 sq ft rolls cheap
    #777091 - 07/25/02 10:03 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

The Raccoon discovered that spunbond polyester filter fabric works small miricles for covering all sorts of differing size tubs, pots & containers (even doorways, windows & air intakes). Some brands will even function as jar filters.

This stuff is about 1/32 to 3/16ths of an inch thick, looks like filter disk material (except very dark gray), you can cut it with anything sharp. It is cheap ($20 for a 4 ft X 50 ft roll), tough & It will withstand autoclaving & PC?ing.

It looks like this:

It is high quality commercial grade landscape fabric. There are several brands to choose from (EasyGardener - for instance). Any realy pro grade nursery, garden supply and/or places like Lowes or Home Depot usualy have it (or can order it).

Do a web search about spunbond polyester landscape fabric. This is not the loose woven plastic crap like cheap tarps are made of. This stuff is like thick filter disk material.

It sure resolved a lot of the Raccoons little nit picky moisture problems that destroyed big ass casings of dung & other related BS (like gnats can?t get through it).

The Raccoon forgot to mention this polybonded filter fabric is not opaque. Light will shine through it, well diffused, but enough to orient growth towards the light source. It also works perfectly as a prefilter for large cfm Hepa filters. SixTango

Do you have any idea as to what the gas exchange or particle mobility stats are for this material?
Thanks

Dino,

No real info. Excepting it is about the same gas permeability as a filter disk commonly sold. As for particle seive porosity size, again about the same. The material is thicker, so the differances are a little tough to tell. Raccoon is testing several brands in various applications & I will let you know the results.

Its wonderful to have someone who tries so many new things here.

I have some here at home used for gardening. Mine was cheaper ($10 for 50ft.)...have you noticed that differing brands vary much to these uses? Do all the differing types PC ok? Good info, thanks! -----Ec0

Since the Raccoon doesnt know what you have, he can't advise. Is it a polyester fiber material? Does it look & feel like filter disk material? If so, it should withstand PC. Polyester fiber will PC. But, it will not withstand contact with flames. Nor, contact with a red hot electric stove element. It either melts or goes up in nasty smoke. On the same hand, a fiter disk won' withstand that either.

It is landscape fabric from "Shur-Block"...the packaging gives no mention of thickness, or what its made of,..however I'm assuming it is the polyester you speak of. My question was aiming at whether you have "good" and "bad" types with the differing brands. ---Ec0

LOL, come on........... there are good & bad types of everything .

The Raccoon is just experimenting with this filter fabric material. If he knew all the answers, he wouldnt be experimenting. All he is doing is looking for frugal simple things that are easy to acquire & use to make cultivation as easy, practical & productive as can be done.

If it is polyester, it looks as tight spunbonded togather as a filter disk & some air / gas will pass through it? Simply try the material you have. I don't have the same stuff. There must be 400 types of it out there & that's just in the USA.

Sorry I could not be more helpfull. SixTango

EasyGardener "commercial grade landscape fabric" is the best of the bunch tried so far. 4 x 50 & 4 x 100 ft rolls @ $20 & $40 bucks at most supply places or stores that stock it.

You should be able to get it at a store -- rather than have to order on/line? It is not rare stuff. The smaller roll weighs 2 pounds 14 oz.

Partial scan pic of label below w/bar code. Sorry the pic is so big. Ignorant Raccoon has never taken time to learn to manipulate pics smaller or smaller KB file size.

Six, I was casually asking, since you had mentioned that you were trying several brands, if you had found that ANY of them did not work at keeping contaminants out. Are you using differing brands as jar filters, and if so, have any allowed contaminants?...I hope this time that I'm more clear in communication....again, thanks for sharing your experiments with us. -----Ec0
