blackcow substrate

quick question. can you just use straight black cow manure (or other composted cow manure) as a substrate? I have pc'ed it for 20 minutes and added crushed oyster shell, then i plan on pouring it over 12 pints of wild bird seed that are fully colonized. Am I missing anything?

you want to pasturize composts and not sterilize them. The difference is the temperature. Pasturization reachs a peak of 175 degrees for one minute while sterilizing is holding a high (15 PSI = 240degrees ?) for a large period of time like 15-20 minutes.

If you sterilize compost you will have to spawn run it in bags. Pasturized poop can be spawned with whole grains like birdseed or rye.

...or something like that

actually, compost is pasteurized. It reaches temperatures of about 160-170 F during the composting phase. Contrary to popular belief P. cubensis doesn?t need microorganisms in the casing for the mycelium to pin, so sterilization can be used where contamination issues are a problem. (straight from the faq). Do i need to case the manure, or just use manure as the casing?

it doesnt need the micro organisms, but if you sterilize it, it kills everything, including bacteria that wont contaminate your substrate but make competition for invading bacteria. basically your putting up a sign that says "Vacancy" and can easily become home to all sorts of invading bacteria, thus the need to do it in bags if sterilized...
