Massage therapist...yay or nay?

I'm looking for some kind of training program that won't last longer then a few months to a year or two that I will be able to semi-enjoy doing and will make decent money, enough to live on my own. I am interested in natural healing, so I've been considering massage therapy or acupuncture. Anything else you can think of?

Do massage therapists make decent money? Know any?

I just need something I can do, and work towards, to create a more financially secure future for myself and massage therapy comes to mind because there are schools everywhere for it and I heard they get paid well. But I don't know about the job market or anything.

What do you think?

I actually know a massage therapist. She has her own table and everything. She says that massager-people usually charge $60 an hour but she charges $50 an hour. She still has to work a coffee shop job though (there isn't a lot of massage business in my city). In a more cosmopolitan area that shit would fly more though probably.

Salary.com gives a salary range from 41-58k/year.

This is decent pay considering it probably is only like a 2 yr. "acreditation" program. Also consider that unless you switch over to running a small business (e.g. open up a spa or something) there will be little to no job advancement.

If you live a simple life, don't require much money, and think you'd enjoy it, I'd say go for it.

Thanks guys...I am only making $10 an hour at my current job so...yeah...lots of room to improve here...

Just trying to consider my options for self-improvment in that area of my life.

I believe occupational therapy will require a formal, 4-year degree (Possibly more) but don't quote me on that (it was mentioned on wiki).

Yeah, you're probably right.

I don't know guys. I just need something that I can do (not physically demanding), doesn't require a lot of training, and pays well.

What does that leave me with besides massage therapy? I was even thinking paralegal but I would hate to work for lawyers.

What pisses me off is the fact I'm going to uni, to do one of the most difficult degrees there is (and end up ridiculously in debt)...And once its all finished.. I'll still start out on about £30k a year :shrug:

Maybe massage therapy is the way to go :laugh:

A science-related degree will give you a run for your money in that category.........although it's slowing starting to pay off.

Yea I am going for Biological Engineering and I will start off making  $40k a year, which is not much compared to some 'easier' degress.

I got a good Bachelors with Honours at uni a year ago and now I only make £15K.

University is such overrated bullshit

Your lucky to have "engineering" at the end of your degree. Imagine doing 4 years for a bachelors, another 5 for a Ph.D. and then throw in one more year of a post-doc and making 41k. Thats what a second year post-doc makes... 41k with a Ph.D.

are you speaking from experience? May Ii ask what degree you have/will have?

It is one of the lowest paid engineering jobs, but it is probably THE most helpful/needed.

From experience.

It took me 4 years to finish my bachelors. I spent 5 in graduate school getting my Ph.D. in pharmacology/toxicology. I'm now a second year post-doc making 41k.
