Tinly little red ants on my freshly innoculated ja
    #769560 - 07/23/02 04:20 AM (22 years, 10 months ago)

A freind of mine just innoculated 12 jars last night. This morning, he found tons of little red ants crawling in and out of three of the jars. We separated the rest of the jars from these three. Has anyone ever encountered anything like this before? Are those three jars done for? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks...

Did the ants wipe their feet?

I'm definitely a newbie, but it seems to me the ants could have introduced contams. After segregating those jars did you notice any more ants? Can you put them where the ants can't go, or (should you?) seal the jars in something?

You say the ants made it into the jars. Why not seal the holes in the lid with tape to prevent them from infiltrating your substrate and then eradicate the ants using conventional means.

The jars already invaded by the ants may or may not be contaminated. Just keep a close watch for anything out of the ordinary and tape those holes ASAP.

crap you created life... maybe some new life forms... But, hrm, they might be contaminated. Just watch them and see if anything funny happens. If you see contams then toss 'em.

I got ants in my honey water jars, they did not contaminate my jar. They were sitting in the jars for days, and still the mycelium stayed fluffy, healthy and white! I used that jar to innoculate my outdoor patch...

Did you think about following the ants, to see where they were going? If it was to a Rave, they might be PARTY ANTS & know whats happening, when & where.
