Innoculation question

Using a flow hood...and jars that have 1/2" vermucilite at the top...can one innoculate the jars by opening the top and just squirting the fluid in.

Or using the same setup, can one poke a sterilized item through the top for innoculation, instead of opening the lid.

I sterilized some jars of rye berries and didn't pre poke the innoculation holes...so I'm wondering the best way to avoid contamination. Thanks.

Unless you are living in some filthy pig sty, you should be able to jsut take the lid off, quickly innoculate, then put lid back on immediately.

I've done it this way many times with no problems. No holes, no tape, no flame sterilization....no flow hood! And not a problem.

The "oven tek" works well. Just heat your oven to about 150?, open the door and use it as your work area, then you can do the transfers w/out too much fear of contams.

Captain is right . Just be cautious and careful and you should be ok. Pay attention to detail. Good luck. If you've got a hood then you're not going many probs. Peace.
