I ordered 115 grams of shredded caapi vine, but have heard that it shredded caapi isnt as potent as whole vine. should i increase the amount of caapi when i brew ayahuasca? what would be a good amount to use?

I've never heard that myself. As far as I know, there shouldn't be any difference between whole and shredded. There's different types of caapi (ie yellow, red, black) and they will undoubtedly all have differences in potency between them. Yellow or cielo is what is usually recommended for first experiences. But if you have so many grams of whole yellow caapi vine and the same amount of shredded yellow caapi vine, they should essentially contain about the same amount of MAOIs.
Actually, if anything, the shredded caapi will probably result in a more potent brew because of the increased surface area. You may even be better off taking the shredded caapi that you're getting and grinding it to a powder to increase the surface area even more.
25 or 30 grams is a good amount of caapi to use first time. What else do you plan to use with it?

im planning on making ayahuasca, but im going to attempt to substitute the usual DMT admixtures with Phalaris grass. Im just trying to gather as much info as possible so that I do this the safest, but most effective way possible.

Grinding the caapi to a powder will result in a large amount of sediment in the brew, cause it will be pretty hard to filter out.
They say you don't want to order shredded because breaking apart the whole vine and brewing it yourself is a very spiritual experience. After you brew a few more times, you'll totally get what I mean.
Shredded caapi is more likely to leave a lot of powdery sediment at the bottom of the bag, and throwing that junk in is not a good idea if you want to make a pallatable brew. Not a good-tasting brew, but one you can physically drink without gagging. I always save the bottom of the bag sediment for smoking.
The method I think best used is taking the whole chunks of shredded vine (not the fibery or powdery stuff) and boiling that for a couple hours. Really, three hours should do it, and may even be overkill. I think the last time I brewed, I only kept it boiling for an hour and forty-five. Then strain, and reduce your liquid.
I wouldn't fuck around with lemon juice or any kind of acid in the boiling step, as it makes the brew taste terrible, and really isn't necessary.
Good luck!

Agreed. I've never started with whole vine and broke it apart myself but I can see how the above would be true.
I just figured he was asking whether to brew shreds of it or chunks of whole vine. And quite frankly, I don't think anyone brews the latter. Maybe I misunderstood slightly though. I dunno.
As far as the sediment goes, in only four times making aya I think I've pretty much perfected a way to minimize it. I strain with cheesecloth after each boiling. Then, after I have my final brew boiled down and everything, I pour it into this plastic water boiling thing that I have. I don't actually plug it in or anything. But this water boiling thing has a spout with a small plastic fine mesh screen in front of it. That doesn't even get rid of all the sediment. But then I put it in a jar and stick it in the fridge. After a day or two any remaining sediment will have pretty much settled and hardened in the bottom of the jar. I pour the liquid into another container and it's just about 100% sediment free.
I just find that powdered caapi seems to work better. And I prefer brewing for a longer time too. But those are just personal preferences. Everyone should find what their own personal preferences are and I think that's a good way to put a piece of yourself into your brew.
