Issue with Mycobag
    #6579504 -

First of all, I know (or assume) that Mycobags are frowned on by serious mushroom growers. This was my first foray into growing mushrooms and I did not have a lot of money to spend on a pressure cooker and a fruiting chamber. The Mycobag seemed like a cheap and easy way for a first time grower to get some shrooms. I've also never even tried shrooms so these will be my first. With this disclaimer, I come to you, psilocybin growing experts, for a little help.

My Mycobag has begun pinning before being completely covered in mycelium. Here's a photo of what I'm talking about:

I've posted this on another forum and there is a controversy about whether or not the bag is contaminated or there was just a problem with colonisation. If the bag was contaminated, I want to leave the bag as it is and put it in indirect sunlight to begin fruiting. If, however, the bag has simply not and will not colonise completely, I want to break up the substrate and mycelium (aborting the shrooms already starting to pin) which will allow me to get several flushes out of this cake.

What do you guys think I should do?

looks like you exposed your bag to light too soon.

also, i could be wrong, but i think that alot of old skoolers love their bags. bulk rulzzz!!!!

I see no pins in that bag,I must say that I have needed a new computer monitor for a month now and everything I see on it is not the color that it should be so I hope I am wrong but to me what I see is a very sickly bag that I personally would not get my hopes up for making it to any kind of harvest.O and leaving a contaminated bag in the sun wont save it as far as I have ever heard and breaking up substrate that is already in fruiting mode will not make it regress back into colonization,Best of luck to you and if it doesn't work out don't get discouraged and just keep trying, you wont really grow mushrooms all that well until you get a PC anyway so just keep trying things and learning while you save up for one. What is in that bag anyway, straw, rye ??

if you are looking fo9r help we need more information on where it was incubated, how it was inoculated etc...Has it been in the sun the whole colonization time?

one of these was an LC
Which do you think it was?

Half of that bag is contaminated with bacteria. That's why it didn't finish colonizing. To the mycelium, it HAS finshed colonizing, because when it ran up against the natural barrier of the contamination, it was just like running up against the edge of the bag. The pin that set is a response to distress. The mycelium senses that it's time to reproduce and/or die, so it sets a fruit body to produce spores. It has nothing to do with light or no light.

Yes, you can tear the colonized portion off, wash the ball of mycelium under the faucet with running water to remove all non-colonized substrate and contaminant spores, and then set it in fruiting conditions as a cake or use as spawn to manure. Personally, I'd stick with the former. If you fruit it as a cake, roll it in dry verm after you wash it, then spray the verm well with a mister once you have the cake in a terrarium.

So was the more likely a fault in the bag, or a fault in the grower?

Hmm... thanks for the input guys.

RogerRabbit: I don't have a terrarium at this point, I was planning to do this all in the bag. Could I still take the cake out, take off the uncolonised portion, (buy some vermiculite) and roll it in it, then put it back in the bag?

burmesepsylicibe: It was inoculated in the "self-healing" patch on the side of the bag. Incubation took place in a small, dark closet where my furnace resides. It was only exposed to light to check on its progress and only today did I put it on my window sill in the sun.

most likely the grower.

most likely from breath during inoculation.

but it could be not wearing gloves,
or over heating (incubating) the bag,
or a couple other things.

most likely.
there is a small chance it was the bag,
but that's a pretty small chance. Especially if it came from a sponsor.

dont touch it, finish fruiting it in the bag for the first flush, then treat it
like RR mentioned, that'll give you a few days to assemble a terrarium... just a
plastic tub, perlite and a spray bottle and armed with a little reading

dont bother making prints from any of the fruits it produces

it looks too moist in there

how much did you inoculate?

I'm not convinced that bag is contaminated. How can you tell? Maybe the medium just wasn't mixed up well enough and the myc went after the best easier-to-colonize bits, working its way around a very dense, drier chunk of the substrate...?

Maybe it is (was, since this is an old post) contaminated, but I'm not convinced that anyone could say with any real certainty just by looking at that picture.

Also, even if the cake is in "fruiting mode", can't it be broken up and mixed with more substrate to induce another "colonization mode"? I'm sure there would be a significant delay, but as long as temperature and humidity (AND STERILITY!) are maintained then I bet it would transition just fine.

But I'm no expert. Just saying...

And so it goes...

huh thats funny i have this exact same problem with my bag also.

does yours have a filter patch?

im just going to put mine in indirect sunlight and try fruiting it and see what happens. if yours has a filter patch i would maybe give that a shot also.

i dont know about taking mine out of the bag and breaking off the uncolonized parts possibly contaminated parts because im paronoid about mold getting airborne in my house.

can mold spores get through a filter patch???

Not sure why the sudden bump for something long past but...
Direct sunlight can raise temps within a bag to really really warm. Perhaps cooked the mycillium?

how are bags frowned upon by growers???

I have tried every possible way to cultivate, and when I found the bags to be like using a "ronco oven" i ditched all other methods.

I still use a few monotubs, but fuck that, bags are the winner.

it's cheap, it's easy, it's fool proof, and you get 1+ pound dry flushes off of ten of them.

so again, how are bags frowned upon?

Re: Issue with Mycobag [Re: jeetered]

I don't think they are frowned upon, they are just another of the millions of ways to grow or fungi.

Using bags to make spawn is probably the most comfortable way to do so and even just fruiting straight out of the bag is a great space saver.

The only problem you could say they have is that for VERY big quantities it is easier to find a big pot or use a drum to pasteurize a load of poo than to pressure cook 100 bags, but I myself would still use the bags to make the spawn that would go into that poo.
