Contamination?? any suggestions? *PICS*

ok well on my first attempt on 7/9 I pressure cooked 10 1/2 pints. Today when I checked on them I found 5 with definate signs of contamination. I didnt tape my holes though because I was using an incubator and remember reading that the dry verm layer is very good at keep out contams. My question is, can someone give me a clue to what kind of contam this is??

I mean i would just like to know if perhaps it looks like something thats common when you contam during innoc, or if perhaps it was due to, too much H2O?? Maybe it was just my sterilaztion? Any ideas or suggestions on this is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

I donno what the conamination is, but it looks like it has entered each jar around the innoculation point. My guess is that you have a contaminated syringe rather than a problem with water balance or general sterilization techniques.

yea, it does appear that way. however that is actualy 2 strains pictured. so do you think this would mean I contaminated both syringes at some point during the innoc. unfortunatlly i didnt have an alcohol lamp to steralize the needle and i used a lighter and wiped clean with 93% alcohol....would the soot left by the lighter if there was any do it? Thnaks again!!

Prolly not but the innoculate in the syringes their selves may be contamed .

Using a lighter, and then wiping with alchohol should be enough to sterilize the needle. I'm certain the contamination was inside the syringe itself. If you bought the syringes, get a replacement. If you made them, be more sterile next time.

I do have some jars from the first batch though that do look to be doing good. If the contam was inside the syringe is it possible for thoses to be contaminaded even though they dont show it?

Or does it mean perhaps that the spores beat the contam in some of the jars? I can post pics of the ones doind good if you would like to see. Thanks again everyone....

just thought that would be another barrier to contams. i tried some with foil under lids and some without and both have done good and bad???
