Second Attempt Pre inoculation Help

I have only tried to grow one time. my first attempt was 3 pink buffalo and 3 china yunnan. Out of my 6 half pint BRF cakes 4 never even made it to the fruiting chamber due to contam. the 2 that did make it gave off 2 nice flushes and then i had to dispose of them for unsaid reasons. The biggest mistake i made in my first attempt was instead of a glovebox i decided to inoculate while laying down on my carpet. i now realized this is a big no-no and believe this is the reason for me loosing so many jars.

Anyway for my second attempt i plan on using 12 half pint jars of BRF if they fruit fine with no contams off a first flush i will be crumbling and applying the 50/50+ Tek after dunking obviously. Now my question is....

i am kinda stuck between two strains right now. the first being brazilian and the second being Ban Phang Ka. I really want to do BPK but i was searching and found that cakes of BPK easily dry out due to the very nice pinset they give and from what ive seen very nice pinset. would any one reccomend or not recommend BPK for cakes and which strain do you think i should do and why????take into consideration im a noob grower and pretty much failed at the first attempt.

are you some sort of felineus fanaticus?

those 'strain' names dont really matter - if you want to see a difference, isolate a strong strain on agar from a multispore print/syringe and find one that is strong. this might be a bit out of the ballpark since you're still trying to get your first one down pat, but don't forget to try new things! pftek isn't where it's all at ya know, try some grain to bulk substrate and chuck it in a monotub to broaden your horizons :cool:

no felinisis....lol jus comfortable and my incubator was on the ground and i put them right in their so it jus seemed right i still used gloves alcohol and oust but lacked the knowledge that 12" above the floor is the worst place to inoculate. I was going to do 4 quart size rye jars then 50/50+ but i already have all the materials needed for 12 jars so im just going to go ahead finish them off and start with grains next.

well ive never used the bpk but have got some brazilian near fully colonised after 10 days from a multi spore from spores 101 they rip through the substrate like nothing ive seen which is in turn going to give contams less time to set in as long as your sterile in the first place use a box with two arm holes cut into it (glove box) use 70% rubbing alcohol and spray the air with some anti bacterial spray and dont do it down on the carpet use a counter and sit comfortable with a stool also make sure there is no moving air except the little you are causing as for the cakes drying out my amazonians dry the cakes out, all the time there is no pins on the cake fine mist them and even add a bubble stone and or extra perlite :thumbup:

Yeah i have had that problem too, cakes drying out, but i believe it to be becuase i maybe birthed my cakes a little too early and they dried out still colinising that extra time.

There are other solutions to your cakes drying out mid fruting, is to sit them in a saucer of water, or the dreaded inject water into cake (which i tried and worked a treat for me)

A cube is a cube, so i wouldnt be so picky about strain, they all grow roughly the same. Although some do have there own nifty little characteristics, but generally if you can grow 1 strain, u can grow the rest fine.

Do not bleach dunk, it is pointless. Use clean water and dunk in the fridge for 18-24 hours.
