about to switch to ubuntu

any advise? the pc i'm converting relies on wireless for internet. will i need new drivers for the adapter? how about my cd burner and dvd-rom?

you should check the forums about your hardware. if it works on the livecd it should work after the install. ubuntu is great though. good luck

i don't think it likes my hardware. it does the ubuntu loading page and then my screen turns white w/ a cursor. do i need to let sit for a while or has something gone wrong?

think he meant RAM. but it will take awhile cause its loading off of a cd. much longer then Hard drive boot. there is only a small chance it wont work. by checking to see if it likes your hardware i think teh guy meant your wireless card. do you have teh right version 32 or 64 bit? im no expert but maybe this helps

i don't know. not my computer. it was for my little sis. she got a new laptop and we inherited her old pc. it's finally giving me the brown wavy screen but the icons. i think it's just taking forever. she managed to funk up the pc w/ aim and other im goodies, so i figure a linux install is the best way to fix all of that.

edit, now the screen is just black.

about the torrent client, i use utorrent 1.6 through wine.

and what version of ubuntu do you have? i used to have feisty fawn and upgraded to gutsy gibbon. gutsy didn't like my laptop too much, it gave me a lot of shit. i then installed kubuntu (gutsy as well) and everything is running smooth.

i'm trying to install ubuntu 7.10. i think i'm about to give up as my pc hasn't done anything for over five hours now. i may try kubuntu 7.10.

you can download a live cd of kubuntu that's designed for PCs with less than 320 mb of ram. maybe that was your problem.

check out the downloads page on kubuntu.org for more details.

ok, i gave up on the install so i can check her specs. it is a 32 bit system w/ a 1.3G processor and 128 ram. i'm going to try the xubuntu 32 bit alternative disk (Gutsy Gibbon) and see what kind of success i have. i may even get some more ram for her piece of crap.

im running ubuntu right now and couldnt be happier. anything that windows does, linux i dont know why you are getting corrupted files. are you downloading from the ubuntu site? you should.

and i would have to say kubuntu is better for laptops as well.

i got them from the kubuntu's torrent tracker. i've tossed those iso's and d/l'ed strait from their site. if that doesn't work, my cd burner sucks. i'm scanning my new disk now. i hate how everything easy always makes itself hard for me.
