I'm a Gentoo user. I've tried Arch, then went back to Gentoo. I thought the repositories were pretty small, I had LOTS of problems with broken package dependencies, and it has nowhere near the level of support for amd64 that Gentoo has. (No other distro matches Gentoo for that, really.) Sorry to say, I don't recommend Arch.
Gentoo is great for genuine geeks.
Ubuntu is probably the best bet for not-so-geeky typical computer users.

AUR is where rarer packages can be found. Did you explore that? It's rare that I cannot find a package and when that happens, I'll just build it with ABS.
And I've heard 64 support isnt that great on Arch and is somewhat buggy, but for normal systems Arch works great. My computer is an nearly 6 year old P4 2.4ghz with 1 gig of PC2700 ram and a slow-ass harddrive & it flies on arch. I have no interest in upgrading anytime soon - perhaps I'll buy one of those eeepc laptops & put arch on it. I personally like not participating in the MS/Apple hardware upgrade cycle.
I guess I'm not interested in Gentoo that much due to the politics of the distro and I'm not interested in compiling everything for such little benefit (although I understand gentoo has binary repos). Arch is plenty fast and very simple and as customizable as I want.
But I can respect any distro that challenges the user and is more CLI-based. Gentoo, Crux, Arch, Slackware, *BSD, whatever...it's all good.
here's my screenshot:

openbox with a theme I put together urxvt rtorrent + moc + raggle on screen firefox conky wallpaper I made based on an autechre album.
I will be trying out dwm or xmonad one of these days.

That's a nice Conky layout. Can you post the config file for it?

agreed about the gentoo thing. if you follow the tutorial from stage one you'll have a great foundation for using and understanding linux.. I personally use ubuntu though because I'm tired of recompiling packages for every update.. for example, any X recompile is a good couple hours.. and if you have ever compiled open office you know it takes at least a solid 15 hours.

I'm not anti-social (anymore, I used to spend all my time at home tinkering with computers.. but smoking loads of pot and becoming interested in the drug scene changed that).. I'm just an elitist

I've been trying out ubuntu the last couple of days and have been really liking it, seems fairly easy to use. I decided to look up some vids of gentoo because of what I read here and oddly enough found this.

if you want to play with gentoo i would suggest following the handbook and building it on another partition while using ubuntu
you will want to keep ubuntu around cause putting gentoo together can be slow, and its quite possible break things
