Mountain skills program (is anyone a guide?)
    #7619280 -

im reposting this from the outdoor sub-thread into here:

Being young and done school, + after taking a few years off school doing what-not, im left with one choice; choosing a direction for the future.

So.. getting desperate, and feeling ill equipped to accept a "typical life"..

Im leaning towards taking a Mountain Skills Program

Which will be a precurser towards bigger and better things down the road, such as: An adventure based tourism degree.. leading to a career in anything as open as Tourism eco adventure business, Guiding and international travel. It could also be a building block to many other avenues..

Anyways, im just wondering if anyone has any experience with acquiring "outdoor skills" through a school like this.. and am wondering what ya'll think of this school?

Also wondering if anyone here is a guide or adventure instructor of some sort?

Thoughts?

I'm in the same boat as you are in. Although I'm fresh out of high school and am in Europe thinking about what to do with my life. I have never thought of this idea and it intrigues me. I like nature and traveling. What else can you do with a degree like this?

That program is not a degree, although a great prerequisite for a course in Adventure tourism, which would allow you to entrepreneur a business in something like mountain guiding/kayak/rock climbing/skiing/mtn biking/etc..

Id like to use it to set up a psychedelic international hostel in Peru offering all inclusive ayahucasa vacations facilitated by a peruvian shaman, and perhaps setting up an e business/psychedelic green house/entheogen suppy.

i havent taken any classes, however i have plenty of self taught and book taught experience. it takes longer to learn this way, however for those of us who dont have the money or time for a class, it works. i am confident that if you were to drop me into the middle of nowhere with nothing more than the clothes on my back i could survive. give me a knife and i could survive well.

i know you are from west coast right? but Chewonki in wiscasset maine does awesome wilderness first responder. thats like basically a wilderness EMT and you need it for everything, leading trips, backpacking, canoeing, mountain climb expeditions, everything. thats what i would do. have you thought of hiking the appalacian trail?

The way i see it, between the cost savings of Rent/food/insurance + gas.. the training really isnt THAT much, considering the experience available.

ive got a trust fund half funding the venture.

It seems like it would be invaluable experience, but really, i suppose im just looking for any easy way out for a destructive lifecycle..
