Air exchange - computer fan question
    #756469 - 07/18/02 01:33 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

A friend was looking to use a 3" computer fan to facilitate air exchange in his fruiting chamber. Some of you guys have them in your setups, how does the fan get powered? He took a power supply from a puter and hooked the 4 pronged plug to it but there is no way to turn the power supply on, no switch.....it used to be controlled by two pronged wires connected to the case switch but he really doesnt want a computer case sitting next to his chamber

Is there an alternate way you guys get power to the unit? If so, who sells it? Any ideas on how to trigger the switch by the two pronged wires would help too....

Would it be better to turn the fan on like 3 times a day for a certain interval or just leave it on all the time?

There's no really simple way to do it 'cause the case button actually plugs onto the motherboard, not the PS, SO...

Go to Radio Shack and get a small 12VDC power supply and use that instead.

Does the fan have any specs on it (ie. 115 V.A.C. 0,110 / 0,104 Amps. 50/60HZ)
If you have specs you could call radio shack if someone here can't help. The example of the specs given will work with a regular plug. regular house power.
and you could use an on off switch in the wire like some lights have.

Cool, I figured a trip to Radio Shack would be what was needed to do....

Yeah, a trip to radio shack should do it, or they also have 'recoton' brand switchable voltage ones at Best Buy for real cheap. And to answer your other question, it's better to run it 3 or 4 different times a day instead of all day long. The shroomies seem to like the fluctuating cycle throughout the day.

Radio shack had a 12VDC power supply for $25....all that was needed to be done was strip off the 4 lead power supply connector and just have the + and - leads which plug into the power supply. A little bit of duct tape and the fan is now attached and pumping air out of the chamber.

You mentioned the fruits liking a fluctuation 3-4 times a day....for a 3" fan, how long would you let the fan go for each session? Obviously it depends on the size of the chamber........my friend is using the martha steward stationary closet thing, what would you suggest as far as how long to let each fanning session go?

Here?s a pic....

Here is the work that was completed w/ the fan....

Actually it is just a matter of connecting to wires on the Morthe board connector together. This mimics the power button on the front connecting trought the motherboard and to the 2 standby wires. I can get you the pin assignments if you need them

I figured that might be the case, just went the easy way instead.

I'd love the pin #'s

Thanx.

Moe.....how long would suggest keeping the fan on for for a chamber of that size? The fan is going to be put on an X10 timer when a good interval is determined....

I know this is old news but I will post it anyway just in case someone else wants to get a fan from radio shack. My friend installed a 4 in Radio Shack Fan on his Fruiting Container.

He bought Radio Shack Model # 273-241c a 4" (105mm)*65CFM*120VAC*60HZ Fan. Note the 120Vac*60HZ, what that tells you is that it will have 2 wires and will plug into a standard U.S. Wall outlet.

All you have to do is go buy a .99Cent Extension cord, cut the end off the cord where you plug stuff in, stip the wires, there will probably be only 2 wires, if you get the cheap cord, twist those 2 wires to the 2 wires on the fan. It doesnt matter which one you connect to, just hook 2 to 2. Thats it, tape the wires up seperatley and plug it into a timer.

This way you dont have to have a converter box to convert to DC.

Hope this helps.

Not bad for 22.00.

Set up looks great. It's nice to have a fan for each chamber of your apparatus, which you do. Like Moe said, 5 minutes or so should be great about 4 times a day. I run mine for 3 minutes 4 times a day.

What are you talking about Mycelium. I know enough about electricity to know what I can and cant do. Trust me I would not advise people to do something like this unless it is safe.

People this will work. If you dont believe me ask people at Radio Shack. They will tell you.

Apparently Mycellium doesnt know the facts about Electricity!

and if you do, I dont know why you would say this is a easy way to get electrocuted . This is 100% safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, don't leave any bare wires(duh) and it should work without hazard....
