how slow is lophophora?
    #7550615 - 10/23/07 12:07 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

just how slow are they? im just curious... how much growth would there be in 1 or 2 years?
I may have to graft to some pereskopis (i think thats how you spell it)
never grafted with lophos but it can't be TOO different from grafting any other cacti.

mod edit: No vendor discussions, do not repeat

if your planning to graft seedlings to pereskiopsis its much faster...

these two are approx 8 months old for example...

main heads are 5cm.

if they are kept own root then 1cm per year is a good rough guide, could be faster depending on growth conditions...

first year or so should be the fastest growth, efter that you would have to be sitting there for a long time to notice any growth...i have yet to notice ANY growth on either of my lophs, ive had them for about 4 or 5 months now, cant really remember exactly when i got them....just speed up the growth by grafting to some pereskoipsis.

depends on conditions. in canada it took me 3 years to see 2-3 cm from seed (bad growing conditions on my part). here i see 5 cm in 2-3 years. weather weather weather lol.

i see..
well it seems like a good investment to have some seeds, and graft a few on pereskiopsis that im getting and save a few rooted.
very exciting to see something grow from seed

thats not true at all... after the first couple of years they are well established with a decent root system and u should see more growth...

Are other Lophophora species slower?

Someone I know has some Lophos that are over a year old and are just about 1 or 2 mm tops. I don't think growning parameters are ideal at all, though. He's just happy they are alive at this point.

lol no lophophora species is that slow growing... definately down to inadequate growth conditions...

i have a seedling, but im not sure if its a loph or one of my many other 'fake' lophs i have around, cant remember which seed i planted, its been growing for about 2-3 months and is about 3-4 possibly 5mm - i dunno im bad at guessing with mm and cms, im only good with inches lol.

i have a bunch of cacti i bought at home depot/walmart/lowes, etc. that look similar to lophs(at least they did to me until i got real lophs) but are much bigger and actually have spines that droop down, making them hard to see. i have a couple pics of one in my cacti garden in my gallery under 'my_garden'...cactusgardenB2 has a good look to it.

yeah you got the baby toes and the obesa right(that i can 100% say they surely are what they are). i was referring to the one in the front, its not astrophytom, at least i dont think- doesnt look like any ive ever seen. it was just sunburned at the time and the pic is horrible so its hard to make a proper ID on it. that one still isnt the one i got the seeds from, that one never even flowered. i have others i have yet to take pics of, which i will be doing soon, as ive added quite a bit more and also had a lot of growth over the summer between my torch and bridgesii.
