Hazardous Vermiculite! Please Read

I know that vermiculite is the popular grow medium here, and it yeild good results, but there is a danger inherint in the use of the material. Vermiculite occurs naturally underground, and this is the sole source for all suppliers, unfortuatley one of the most dangerous forms of asbestos also occurs in every place the vermiculite is mined. A couple years ago it became apparent that a whole town next to a vermiculite mine, including all the workers, had some form of cancer caused by the large amounts of particulate asbestos floating invisible in the air. I'm kind of a newb at growing so i dont know if perlite is a viable replacement, but tests have shown that there are no clean sources of vermiculite. Do a google search if you dont believe me, but please consider switching, simply handeling the substance without a respirator complete with a hepa-filter exposes you to the super fine asbestos fibers. My dad was an insulation remover, and he absolutley refused to be near vermiculite without his gear. I promise I'm not a lobbyist for the perlite market haha, just trying to give a heads up to the community because I didnt see any warnings/posts about this.

I don't know the whole story and I'm sure someone here does but a mine did contain asbestos and was shut down. Vermiculite is free of asbestos or they wouldn't be selling it. And perlite can't take the place of verm.

I believe you are refering to Libby, Mt, and the ones that suffered from mesothelioma were the workers who inhaled vast quantities of dust over decades of working in the vermiculite operations.
There is a documentary film about the situation in Libby, Mt called "Libby, Mt"
I wouldn't worry about handling vermiculite at all.

I have spent years trying to get stores to put Vermiculite back up on the shelves.

please don't buy into the urban legion that Vermiculite still has asbestos in it.

Vermiculite mines are very closely monitored by the EPA these days.
