azurescens on past. straw

As anybody ever fruited psilocybe azurescens on past. straw ?

I recently inoculated some straw with some rye grain spawn. Mycellial growth is fast, faster than on wood chips. I'll put the straw filled box outdoor this autumn. Let's see what happens.

Its possible - shiitake fruit off wheat straw and refuse off cardboard, so why not give it a try?? Or maybe use the straw to spawn a bad of alder and beech

I have been growing Psilocybe cyanescens which is very similar to azurescens. I have been considering adding other media to the outdoor Maple woodpiles. I even thought about straw as they say the woodeaters like lignin and straw seems pretty ligninous to me. I decided against it as when reading about Pans they seem to say that straw contaminates easily. If the straw works I will be very interested. If the straw does become contaminated don't get too nervous. It's been my experience with contaminated jars that the cyanescens dominates the comtaminations and takes over the entire jar anyway. It seems that in various areas of the world people have trouble finding good wood for their profects. If the straw works what a bonus. I read that you need larger chunks of wood to fruit well so it remains to be seen if you can fruit it. If it works I would mulch my entire garden with straw and fill it with cyanescens. If the mycellium grows as quickly as you say on the straw then I will consider making layers of straw and wood in my outdoor piles. Keep us updated on your project please.

Taking your lead, I have tried to experiment with the cyanescens and straw like materials. I do not have straw and I don't want to drive 35 miles to the edge of town to get a bale of straw. I will look but in the mean time, I am using something else. I am making a nice compost for my Pan subs and I decided to use Kaytee Natural Timothy Cubes which I got at Petsmart. This is Alfalfa and Timothy's hay all ground up and pressed into 1 1/2 " little blocks. Soak it for 15 minutes and it breaks up into 1/4 " to 1/2 " pieces of hay. I put some in a jar and ripped a little piece of mycellium out of the Aspen litter and set it into the grass. I am hoping it will like it as much as you say the azurescens likes the straw. I'm also testing for contaminations as I didn't pasturize the hay, just soaked it in steaming hot water from the tap.
Let us know how you are making out with the straw and if you see any contamination.

I don't know if you can use straw as a substrate for azures or cynans but this year I covered my outdoor bed with a couple inches of straw instead of the usual leaves and forest debris. The mycelium is robustly spreading from the wood chips to the straw. I still expect the straw would be insuffcient for the substrate alone. It is probably still the interface between the mycelium bed and the fruit. Like a casing layer.

I pasteurize the straw in a hot water bath (160-170 F) for 45 minutes.
In my experience, straw pasteurized in this way hardly contaminates as long as it has been well drained.

I've read that alfalfa is not suited for pasteurization because it gets easily contaminated for it has a high protein content.
