What are your personal experiences with growing Cubies on wood chips? * 1

Here's an old pic I found in a folder somewhere, I don't know which shroomerite made it. What you see here is cubensis fruiting on a substrate of hardwood chips.

We know Cubies fruit on cardboard and newspaper so it does in fact eat cellulose. We also know people apparently with success grew B+ cubies on hardwood chips.

So all in all.. apparently it can be done after all.



Is there anyone here who has experiences with attempting to grow Cubensis on the right kind of woodchips? (hardwood, not the conifer shavings that not even Azures grow on) If so, please share your experiences with us.

ive often felt the need to contest the theory about psilocybes not being able to digest wood, for the cellulose newspaper/etc theory.

but i wonder, are those mushrooms fruiting from a mycelial network that grew around and onto the chips, rather than actually digesting them in the process?

you can mix verm with grains and watch the verm be 'colonized', but we're pretty sure it didnt digest any verm.

Thats the big question. Personally I suspect the right woodchips might be a less-than-ideal substrate, but a substrate nontheless. A bit like cardboard is.

Here is a recent thread of a member who dumped contammed cakes in a pile of hardwood chips, and got a flush of B+ for it!

When using search you see this kinds of things described every now and again. I'm wondering how much actual experience there is, vs how much assumption goes around.

which is a very good point =)
my guess would be pre-decomposed wood would be ideal for cubes.

stamets (and god, isnt that name thrown around alot?) outlines a technique of running 3-4 different species thru the same substrate, first a heavy wood decomposer (shitake), then a secondary wood decomposer (oysters), followed by a compost decomposer (stropharia or cubensis), because by this point, he says the blocks of mycelium, having been resterilized and recolonized successively, makes the final substrate a fluffy humus type mixture.

interesting stuff no doubt...its just a matter of getting the wood to the right stage, i say.

Wow, so basically inoculate with shiitake first, then the spent substrate with oysters, then that spent substrate with cubensis?
That sounds like a great use of substrate.

Still it leaves open the matter of the use of woodchips as a primary cubensis substrate.

thats correct, im trying to find the actual page and book it comes from right now.
and yes, still leaves the matter open =)
id love to test it, but im just now venturing into actually finding a local sawdust 'vendor', if you call a scooping sawdust off a sawmill a 'vendor' =)

I've thought up and tested the Woodlover Smoothie TEK which basically boils down to making a smoothie of fresh mushrooms and water and using that to inoculate bleach-pasteurized woodchips. It worked spectacularly for Psilocybe cyanescens, turning 30 grams of fresh mushrooms into 15 liters of pure white spawn.

I'm thinking if I do the same move with fresh Cubies, there will be nothing present substrate-wise than those beech chips. If there will be growth then, it will be fed by the wood and not by for instance crumbled cakes of proper spawn. I can get fresh cubies legally at my local smartshop (God bless Holland!) so starting this up would be easy.

I'd love to see that page if you have it.

Cubensis on wood - let's crack this nut once and for all.

pg22 of growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms, since i dont know if you have the book or not, ill type it out

"Species succession can be accomplished indoors. here is one example. After Shiitake stops producing on logs or sawdust, the substrate can be broken apart, remoistened, resterilized, and reinoculated with another gourmet mushroom; in this case, I recommend Oyster mushrooms. Once the Oyster mushroom life cycle is completed, the substrate can be again sterilized, and inoculated with the next species. Shiitake, Oyster, King Stropharia, and finally Shaggy Manes can all be grown on the same substrate, increasingly reducing the substrate mass, without the addition of new materials. The majority of the substrate mass that does not evolve into gases, is regenerated into mushrooms. The conversion of substrate mass-to-mushroom mass is mind boggling. These Concepts are further developed in Chapter 22."

Do we know that? If you've got a link to a grow log, let's see it. Cube myc will certainly grow on cardboard, I've seen it will my own eyes. But the only pic I've ever seen of a cube fruting on it is the mini-cube on last month's POTM.

Yes.




Woodchips are a poor performer for cubes though. I've fruited them a few times on it, with poor results compared to compost/straw/manure etc.

Yes they were.  In fact, they're the best pictures of cubes on wood I have.  I think the cauliflower fungus broke down the wood enough to allow the cube mycelium to eat what was left.  Cubes on fresh woodchips and sawdust never performed as well as those did. 

I would still recommend using manure or straw, etc., when growing cubes.  You'll get better performance.  The other stuff is fun, and experimentation is how we all learn. However, part of experimenting is reporting the results accurately, even if they don't match what we 'thought' would happen.  Good luck to all, and never be afraid to try something just because it's weird.

In fact, people are so resistant to change, perhaps if you have a 'weird' idea, just go ahead and try it rather than posting first.  If it works, post the pics.  That way, nobody can call you an idiot. :wink:

I'm wondering.. how poor was their performance on untreated wood chips? How long did the colonization take, were there well-developed fruits, what would you estimate to be the dry wood/dry Cubies ratio one could get out?

Do you think this experiment has a chance to succeed? I don't have high expectations but do you think the mycelium will take? For cyans, would it be OK to omit the bleach?

On fresh woodchips, usually trichoderma took over before the mushroom mycelium could get established. I think it's a case of a starving organism will eat whatever it has to in order to survive, but might not thrive on the food.

Try your same method into a pile of manure/straw for cubes and I'm sure it will work.
