Yet ANOTHER type of gym!!??
    #7467911 - 09/29/07 06:04 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Today I found what i believe to be yet another type of gymnopilus. Id like any opinions that can be offered. Its a tough call because they are lacking veils, and have a very subtle odor...also a very small taste test (of course i spit it out and rinsed afterwards) yielded almost NO taste at all....here goes...

Habitat: Dead wood
Cap: Orange, fibrous, thick flesh (flesh beige colored) 4-5 cm.
Gills: Not attached. off white-orange with spores.
stalk: 3-3.5 cm. Thick, Fibrous, same color as cap.no veil at all.
Spore print: orange/rust
Other: odor similar to chantrelles (flower semi citrus semi apricot)Odor not strong, not flavorful. No bruising noticeable.

You said the gills were not attached, when they look to be slightly decurrent. And is that hints of green bruising I see?
I'm pretty sure if it's a gym of some sort, it should be about the most bitter taste you've ever tasted.

Good call, i was looking at a sample with gills that were damaged. Yes they are attached. Also, in re-examining them I found that a few of them are knobbed in the center of the cap. definately no green or blue bruising though :frown:

Definitely a Gymnopilus species. I haven't seen it before either. Very cool!

I am seriously considering writing a monograph on Gymnopilus, so please people, keep your eyes open and PM me if you find any.

In the interest of not having to start a 3rd Gym post this week, I will be posting pictures/info on ANOTHER gym varitey this evening. Im going out to hunt them in a few mins, The location almost always has a few, but ive never taken any pics of them...I will be taking pics of whatever I find,. tough that might not be very much due to the dissapointing amount of rainfall we've been having here. Check back this evening to see what I find.

Another variety...

Cap: 2-4cm, smooth, fleshy, orange
Gills: orange, stained with spores, attached, crowded
Stalk: .5cm thick, 2cm tall, thick, no veil, colored as cap
Spores: Rusty orange
Other: Bruises to dark orange/brown. weakly smells of anise. caps deformed on most specimens. Ive found these before and they are usually bigger. [image][/image]

I also found a whoooole bunch of this...
