Possible Big Gym Find
    #1975220 - 10/03/03 06:08 AM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Hey all,
Found some more presumed gymnos yesterday. Check out the pic.
See the blueing at the bottom of the stems?
I was going to let them grow, but we got our first freeze this morning, and I was afraid the little guys wouldnt survive. Does anybody think that they can live in that much cold?
Anyway, heres my details

Location: woods floor, Massachusetts
Color: orange/yellow
Caps: conical/very dry
Spore print: ORange! Very orange.
Taste: Very bitter, had to spit it out quickly
Gills: attached inside
Smell: sweet, just like the other bigger gyms ive found.

What do ya think?

Well, they match the description! The blueing on the base looks promising... Id say yes, they are, but, I'm not very good at IDing this genus.

Wait for some more feedback before consuming.

They look like they're Gymnopilus spectabilis to me. They're a bit small, but they're also clearly very young specimens.

Happy mushrooming!

I think I found some but mine have scales on the caps. Now is the spore print sposed to be a rusty/tan/orange. Or a bright orange?

In general, spore prints of Gymnopilus species are a bright orangish rusty brown. For that matter, for most Gymopilus species, most (if not all) of the mushroom is the same color. The caps tend to be dry and have a silky, fibrillose appearance. And they almost always grow on wood. They are fleshy and may or may not have a ring on the stem, and they have attached gills. The also tend to grow in clusters, often fused at the base of the stem.

That's the general description of how to recognize a Gymnopilus in the field.

Happy mushrooming!

The ones I found had sort of slimy caps. Hmm. I wont eat them thats for sure. Maybe they will blue as they dry. The rest of the disceptions fit pretty well.

The sliminess of a cap is a charateristic that can be pretty variable depending on how wet everything is. If everything's soaked, most mushrooms end up with fairly slimy feeling caps. If it's dry, even the normally slimy capped mushrooms often end up with dry caps.

So you should judge the sliminess based partly on that, also. If the cap seems slimy, is there an actual layer of slime on the cap, or is it just sort of slippery feeling?

Happy mushrooming!
