I'm trying to move some video from one of my machines to another but after about 10 minutes it drops the connection. I've been downloading torrents with no problems. Am I expecting too much?

No. I transfer hundreds of gigs through my wireless routers occasionally, and 5 gigs is nothing.

I transfer more than that (~8gb) in real-time every time I watch a DVD over my WiFi network.
