Closer you are to the source, the faster the link. There are usually some options you can set to speed things up a bit, if you have decent hardware... though the tweaks usually reduce compatability with other devices.

You can also switch to 802.11g, but that requires hardware upgrades.

Watch the phones you have near the thing.

I setup a wireless network for a guy, had to end up going out there like 3 times. Everything would work ok for everyone durring the day, but as soon as he came home it became useless. I even had him walk back out to his car and it started working again, eventually we figued out that it was his cell phone which is real odd because i thought the cell phones were on a frequency far enough away to not cause problems, his wife had a cell phone that didnt effect it, nor did there other cordless phones.

Im gonna gues the whole problem came from the owner being a cheap bastrd buying the cheapest wireless stuff he could find. Although they worked perfectly when the phone wasnt around. Just for reference the wlan adaptors were 'zonet' they usually come in an orange box and the hardware is a perl white.

He ended up returning the wireless stuff and using his phone line network adaptors, and i got stiffed by the store owner the extra money i should have made for going out there because he returned the stuff =\

I have also seen the direction of the antenna on the base station having a large effect. If it was aligned up/down the thing worked like a charm... if it was aligned horizontal then it quit working. Probably has to do with the orientation to the ground plane, but I was never very good with RF theory. In this case, the base station was upstairs and the client computer was downstairs, almost directly under the base station.

Try turning off WEP encryption too. It slows down things a lot.

If you do this then turn off SSID broadcast and turn on MAC filtering, to prevent giving access to everybody on your access point.

Also keep in mind that all traffic sent without WEP is plainly readable, so don't use wireless for sensitive things like banking (WEP is very easy to crack, so this is good advice either way).
