Tech geeks...I need your help

I formatted my computer and reinstalled Winblows XP. I've done this a million times. But, now for some reason whenever I throw a DVD in it won't play. Windows Media player pops up and it says, "A compatible DVD encoder isnt installed". I tried downloading new versions of Windows Media Player and I still get the same problem. Um...this always used to work no problem. It's just a freaking DVD. What the fuck is up?

I have an easy fix for this. (if your cool with using other software to play your DVD's) Give me about 5 minutes!

I'm just kind of curious as to why Windows Media player won't play a DVD...I mean come on.

I thought in general media player wont play a normal DVD. You have to purchase copyrights. You must have had the rights to play DVDs and lost that in the code when you formatted.

I use "Media Player Classic" to play DVDs because of this.

Run ALL windows updates.  This will give you the newest IE(7), Media Player, all patches, fixes, etc...


After that download and install K-Lite Codec pack.  If you're still having issues, PM me. :lol:

Start>All Programs at the top of the list should be Windows Updates

Did you run windows update yet? I believe there is a way to download those plugins that allow you to play DVDs. I ran into the same problem as you and was far to lazy to investigate the issue.

Ahh..ok. I've never updated before. Yep...my copy is on the up and up. Let's see what happens.

It's amazing how computer illiterate one becomes after being out of the loop for a few years. I used to run my own computer business some years ago and now I swear I'm a computer idiot.

From a fresh install, it'll take about 80-ish updates so I'd let it run overnight. I do it every day at the squad but we have software that puts the latest updates in without the downloading so we only really need to load 10 or so updates from Microsoft. I definitely think it'll help though...it's always best to be completely up to date.

dude, simpler solution. http://www.videolan.org/

dload that. it's a super lite video playing software that plays EVERYTHING. it'll take you 2 minutes to dload and install, max.

so you can get right back to your pr0n.

Then use "media player classic". It looks old school, but it works and has better setting for use on TVs.

i used media player classic for a long time, but it doesn't have the overall playability that vlc does. you have to dload codecs and shit for it. vlc comes with every possible codec you would need already ingrained into the super lite program. it's simply the best small program for playing videos.

I tried VLC a few years back. I dont remember what I didnt like about, but I think it was a lack of color setting and screen zoom settings.

There is no perfect player for all media imo. I have tried alot. What I use now is a combination of Winamp, Windows Media Player, and Media Player Classic.

ahh.. i've recently quit winamp. it was a bit too much of a hog, and my cpu is getting rather old. now i use foobar2000 for music (thanks junkfood and everyone else who suggested it) and vlc like always for video. I guess i don't really fuck with color or zoom at all. i just want a player that will play it all, dvd, avi, iso, mkv, indiscriminately without me worrying about which codecs i have installed.
