tech nerds, help me please
    #3989822 - 03/30/05 01:11 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

didnt we used to have a tech help forum here?  anyway, can anybody direct me to some real good spyware and/or virus scan programs that actually work for viruses, popups, and hacking prevention.  even if they arent free, cus my computer as of late has been getting beaten to a pulp by nonsense.  popups everywere and this one REALLY annoying one that never closes when i try to.  it just covers part of the screen and makes it impossible to see stuff sometimes.

this is such a pain in the ass, and its tearing up my psyche at times.  if anyone can help me out with this please do.

The forum is called 'science and technology' or something like that.

For problems with internet explorer, use hijackthis (you can probably find it by doign a search on google). Basically you just find the lines that aren't supposed to be there and remove them... it can be tricky.

You could also download Ad aware, or perhaps AVG free... those are the ones I use.

Watch out for hijackthis! You can really mess up your computer if you don't know what you are doing with it.

Hah, yeah, I probably should have mentioned that.

Probably just IE, rather than the whole computer though.

Go to add/remove programs. This exact thing happened to me once before. Some pop-ups intall a program on your computer so they will pop up at specific intervals during the day. Once you remove it, run a spyware check; ad-aware is what I use, you can get it for free at download.com (I think). As far as stopping other pop-ups (the normal kind) install the yahoo toolbar it has anti pop-up and anti spyware with it. And lastly a good free virus protection program is avast antivirus. Good luck.

I also posted this in the science and tech section... just being extra helpful i guess

That's too true.

Unless you're some super computer guru, stick with the really credible browsers like gecko-based ones for instance. I payed for Opera because it really kicked ass until about a year or two ago.
I never wanted to install firefox because I thought the name sounded stupid, but when I gave it a try I loved it. I went into the preferences and tweaked a couple of things to my liking which took about 5 minutes, downloaded the first theme I came across and loved that too and I haven't changed browsers since! I'm usually a stickler for techie crap and ultra aesthetics but I just cannot friggen complain about firefox!

Don't use internet explorer for anything really... I just use it for my banking website and that's only to check my balance. Too much crap is geared towards internet explorer. Trust me, I work in tech support as a senior rep (It's a tiered system) and spyware's the number one killer when it comes to computers. All you need to know is how to run adaware once a week, or better yet the microsoft antispyware beta and you won't have any issues.

For a tech support rep I'm suprisingly casual with my home computer. I have the antispyware beta which blew my socks off and completely suprised me (Props to Giant!) and adaware for spyware troubles. I run them sparingly and I don't download crappy programs. I haven't had any trouble at all except for when a toolbar or two appeared possibly because of a family member. Download something free like avg for antivirus protection, and a half decent firewall like zone alarm or kerio and you'll be good to go. A hardware firewall comes on just about any router out there (I don't think that any don't come without them now?) and that's added protection. I don't game on my system so connecting to games or setting up file serves isn't a priority, but when and if I ever do I don't have a problem.

It's really just basic. Keep your computer free of stupid programs, get some protection and just really use your brain. I've never had a bad virus problem in my life that wrecked a system. I think we had to reformat a family computer one time but that was pre-2000 so it was over 5 years ago.

I know this post is rough around the edges but it should give you a little more insight. I hope people take these tips into account because when all of the sudden their internet explorer shoots out 5 million popups, takes 20 minutes to load because of toolbar shit, or redirects them to some search page no matter what they do.... :smirk:
