I don't know if what I say is applicable but I've read that some priests wear a device such as a belt with nails thru it.(edit: I'm not encouraging such activity. seek the advice of a professional) The article I read stated that they were encouraged to wear such a thing.

So I'm thinking perhaps they get some psychic reward for such activity. I don't know about the rewards but psychologically this may remove feelings of guilt of performing something considered socially unwelcome.

i dont cut myself personally but i would suggest eating chilli :wink: its incredibly painful :smile: but be careful its also addictive...

I've read that success has been achieved in the alleviation of depression thru acupuncture, so maybe you are on to something that as you say will prove to be rewarding.

If you have a true problem with self mutilation and you are looking into a substitute that involves sticking needles in yourself, I think you are going in the wrong direction. Substitution never works. Also you will be on dangerous ground when sticking needles in yourself. You are looking for satisfaction from this substitution. What kind of satisfaction? Is it going to hurt? That is what you're looking for. Self mutilation is an addiction like anything else. You need to find other ways to occupy your mind that doesn't involve piercing your flesh. Try to find out what is behind this behavior. What emotions drive you and where do they come from. Work on loving yourself so that you don't want to mutilate yourself. Find a support group. There is so much that needs to be said about this but I can't communicate it all via typing on a forum like this.
Bottom line this is a serious psychological problem that you can't fix by substituting a lesser form of mutilation. Just like a beer is no big deal unless you're an alcoholic, so is acupuncture to a self mutilator.
Again I say, find a support group.

trying running, run till it hurts so bad you dont think you can go anymore to the point where you feel like your insides are bleeding. then keep going. its amazing and after awhile you get high and when you are done the high stays.

I've had success with burning my penis and testicles with a butane lighter, you should try it, I believe it will help you greatly.

Seriously, when you feel like that just get up and start running. Don't stop until you feel as if you are going to collapse from the pain.

You would be amazed at how much better you will feel over all after doing this from time to time when you feel bored or depressed.

I remember hearing someone say that they associated cutting with the feeling of being in control. Dont know too much on the subject but hopefully that might give you some better ideas that are more oriented with adding a difference in your life rather than replacing it with something related to your issue.

I got acupuncture about a week ago, it was actually very painful... made me not want to do it again. Then again, the guy who gave it to me gives it for free so maybe he's not the best.

I had acupuncture before, it's not painful when done right (you will notice the needles going in) but it forces you to be relaxed.

The device booby is referring to is a self flagellation device. Because whipping oneself for impure thoughts is looked down upon, the device with blunt spikes that is worn on the thigh (and is popular with the christian cult opus dei) to cause discomfort.

The discomfort of the pain has two purposes. 1: It causes endorphene release, which for those that are chaste, this is the only pleasure they really get and 2) For those religiously inclined, because they are chaste, they can feel closer to god.

The above I have heard described as "sex gone sour" which to me makes a lot of sense.

However, for your self harm becoming religious will do nothing but sap at your sanity and make you feel guilty for not being perfect, which in turn will either break you, or make you more pious (either way, they win). Neither will having needles put into you, acupuncture's effects will just make you relaxed (if done well) and little else, even if you believe the superstition that clouds the ancient practice. As written communication is not useful for diagnosing your condition, I strongly recommend you find a therapist that will listen to you, and one that is smart enough to ask you the right questions.

Get to the bottom of cutting. I mean research the condition in the DSM-IV and REALLY try to understand the brain processes behind it. If you look, you'll find that it's a relatively new phenomenon, something we learn to do by seeing others do it. That's not to negate it's effects or say it's not a "real" condition in any way, but it is a behavior and not necessarily the effect of a causal neurological disorder.

Like any addiction or compulsion, it can be a tough habit to break, but once you see it as just that--a habit--it will be easier to give up. I'm sure there are some traumas and past hurts that have lead up to it, so you should get into some therapy or find another way to really examine these, allow yourself to grieve, accept them, and then move on. Find ways to bring balance and moderation into your everyday life so you can be at peace with yourself and others.

Replacing one habit with another should only be a temporary solution, as it does nothing to resolve the underlying problem. I'm sure there are many "alternatives" to cutting, but the only real alternative is not cutting, which can best be achieved through gaining an understanding of what self-mutilation is, why people do it in general, and why YOU do it.

I've seen several books on the subject in the library, and I'm sure there are some good resources online as well. There's nothing wrong with seeking help and information or using spiritual inspiration to overcome your problem. Best of luck!
