Outdoor cultivation question.
    #7412454 - 09/15/07 08:57 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I am in the southeast and my normal weather conditions(for much of the year) and backyeard environment is ideal for growing shrooms outside. But I need it to be discreet. I don't want a 4x8 mushroom patch 5 feet from my neighbors yard.

What sort of production could i expect from a large rubbermaid sized patch in good growing conditions? How does it compare to PF-tek production?

Thanks,
Mbmcewen

In my experience outdoor patches come up sporadically. They don't really flush like when growing indoors, you may get a few once day, you may get 10 a couple days after that. The hard part is getting them before the bugs get em. Animals sometimes like to dig up the myc also.

I would put a layer of hydrated straw down a layer of moist poo, then your spawn and more poo, then cover the whole thing with another layer of moist straw.

I figured the production might be like that, but I wonder if it would be enough for my needs. I am not able to enjoy something that lasts 6 hours very often...kids and such, but I could just pick and dry them as they come up and save them up....a small lattice work box next to the house. I could tell people it is a compost heap if they ask....lol. This might be worth trying.

Am I wondering off track here. Would this be a feasible, useful option?

Thanks,
Mbmcewen

Sure it would if your conditions are right. Maybe run a soaker hose around it kinda hid under the straw so in case it gets a lil dry you can water it. While not looking retarded watering your compost pile.

You're supposed to water compost piles too. It doesn't look silly to do so. They stop composting if they dry out.

Are they self-sustaining, or is there a good bit of maintenance involved....I guess I am looking at long term. seems the nutrients would diminish after a while. What do I do to keep it going?

Thanks is advance.

That's it?! man that is the way to go.

I am assuming that barring weather conditiones that make outdoor cultivation impossible, I will not need to add more culture.."overseed"?

When you are ready to add more poo/straw i would just mix it all up together again, so that it starts colonizing the new substrate and put a fresh layer on top as well. Then it should start fruiting again after it is colonized.

Well, truthfully, I am not. I am a newbie. But this may be a project for next spring. I can get my technique down indoors until then.

Thanks!

You should like it. Some good info there. Paul Stamets books The Mushroom Cultivator and Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms are worth a look also. Some libraries have those two books if not they can do an Inter Library Loan for you. You can take a look at them before or instead of buying.

Good plan. Grow inside all winter, build your outdoor bed in the spring. If you set it up right, you should be able to get a nice sustained growth out of it.

Awesome. So I just save my "spent dirt"? (That is probably not the technical term for it) But I also need a bit that is fully colonized right?

I can't wait.
