Old time cultivation method

I was talking to one of my friends that grew in the late '60s. He said he used a wooden trough with an agar like growth medium. I almost laughed at him! I asked about contams and he said they just cut the bad parts out. He didn't seem at all concerned about it effecting his mushrooms (the contamination). Has anyone else heard of this? I am just curious if he is pulling my leg or if the methods of yesteryear were really that poor.

Yeah, I wonder how many people even thought of growing back then, it would be interesting to find out about their techniques. I know that Albert Hoffman & co were growin shrooms on agar cultures in the 50's / 60's, maybe MJ shroomer or someone else will know more about this?
