It's scary to think how much history has been re-written or revisioned in just three generations.

We won already? Oh thank god. I was concerned that our troops were still being shot at and the Iraqi government was in shambles. But then again, I did forget "Mission Accomplished!" If it was on a banner on an aircraft carrier it must be true. So, who's going to break the news to the Iraqi freedom fighters?

Did we not?

Look, the facts are plain; this whole affiar was dumb from the start. No purpose and no results. The only thing we can say as positive is that we got rid of that ass who gasses his people and locks em up/ tortures them for no reason.

So would you mind if I Liberated you from your family or your superiors at your job? All we did was replace a stable domestic tyrant with a foreign violent anarchist puppet regime. It's not like we did Iraq a favor or a good thing.

Good golly, I'm sick of people thinking anyone who can identify anything positive about this quagmire is somehow ignorant.

Yeah, I know about the gassing and our culpability (US companies et cet) and how we supported him for political reasons to influence the power structure over there. I know we stood silent while he did horrible things. So what? Were not talking about the US. Were talking about Saddam, and I think its a good thing he's not there anymore.

No it is not for the best, no the people are not better off overall, but it is good saddam is no longer in charge.

And I'm not sure why you think the government is a puppet of us... They've said they don't need us anymore, and they are elected by the people. The original regime was installed by us, but the people now have the vote.

Just take a deep breath people, I'm not saying the invasion was a good thing

not talking about us. I'm saying saddam was bad. If you want to have a discussion about the US-Saddam connection thats fine, but I was not differentiating him from us- only saying he was naughty.

who is it better for that saddam is gone? allegedly we went in there to give the iraqis a better way of life, or was it wmds? i forget.

anyway, i'd be willing to put my money on it that unless they are a foreign insurgent, they'd take saddam back over the mess we created.

So would you rather have Saddam or some ridiculous religious war on top of an unstable region which was Saddam's domain? If there is no benefit to the citizens of Iraq if Saddam was taken out... then what was the point?

I was taking exception to the word liberation to the concept of American involvement in Iraq. To the Germans the Nazis liberated France and most of Europe. The United States liberated Vietnam in order to keep the communists from under our bed (sound familiar... we have to fight them over there or else those commies will be in DC by sundown) Ulysses S. Grant and the Union army liberated the South. It's such a bullshit Orwellian word to put a positive spin on empire building and illegal conflict.

Also the governments we instilled in Iran, Cuba, Chile, and Afghanistan just brought freedom, happiness, and prosperity to those countries citizens.

This entire thing is simply history repeating itself in the form of another great american fuckup. You know the thing that I think bothers me so much is that Iraq is completely unoriginal, this has happened dozens of times in the 20th century alone and all with what an optimist would say was mixed results.

Christ, I already said the whole thing was a mistake. Yes I would rather saddam was still in power, he was not much of a threat at all.

You have no argument with me on this, calm down.

that's exactly it, he was no threat to us. sure he may have been a huge threat to people who opposed him in his own country (how much so, i'm not sure. i have talked with several arabs who have no problem with him. however, they didn't live in iraq.), but that's for the iraqi people to solve, not us.

oh wait, they have oil??? shit we need to get in there and install a puppet, quick!!!1

Is denying us oil a threat to us? Im not sure...

I agree with the deposing of saddam because he violated our peace treaty. He fired on our troops who were doing what he agreed to in the treaty. (he was a threat to them) But of course deposing saddam was easy and relatively painless, unlike the occupation...

Is that the reason now? First it was we're going after Osama, then it was "He tried to kill my daddy!" then it was WMDs, then it was for liberation of the Iraqi people, then it was for justice for the Kurds for some fucking thing that happened almost twenty years ago when George Bush Sr. and Saddam were still fucking on a regular basis and now it's because they shot at our troops?

You know those fucking Cubans blew up our battleship and those goddamn Vietnamese motherfuckers shot at our destroyer as well...

See... nothing changes.

Ah, who knows what the reason bush wanted in was. Perhaps it was oil, perhpas megalomania, who knows.

We've not really made off with the oil yet, to my knowledge, but maybe bush is trying to not stir the pot too much. I have heard our reconstruction may be funded through their oil, but this isn't anything we're benefiting directly from- though the american contractors sure are making a killing, and kicking small nuggets to the parties.

That has always been my reason for supporting it. Even before 9/11. '98 is when he violated our treaty.

Didn't Clinton attack Iraq and drop bombs on Iraq during the peak of the Presidential Blow Job sweepstakes for that? So if going by your logic and this sets a precedent, the bully who used to throw sand at me in elementary school, can I go blow his head off with a shotgun now nearly a decade later?
