Help me pop my Reishi cherry!
    #7342551 -

So I was hiking the Appalachian Trail and came upon HUNDREDS of varieties of mushrooms so I've taken a bunch of pictures and will upload soon.
I'm a novice when it comes to using mushrooms medicinally although they have come to my attention quite frequently as of late... probably the universe telling me to EAT SOME!
So anyway I saw some reishi (I was able to ID them from this great herbal store here in NYC that had a few dried ones) and got 6 pounds!!!!!!
Now what? Help me pop my Reishi Cherry!
I wiped them off with a damp rag to get the dark green / tealish stuff off the bottom and the dirt off the top. Now they are hanging in the windowsill cuz I don't know what else to do.
From your posts, it seems I should boil them for tea... but how much per how much water? Boil for how long?
How much do I use to make a tincture? Extraction?
Will they dry in my window sill or should I use the oven @ low temp with the door open?
Can I make the tea/tincture/extraction with fresh and dry? Or what?
Any advice would be MUCH appreciated! I'd love to use them on myself and clients!!!!

Reishi means 'mushroom of immortality' I read somewhere. They're supposed to be very good for you. I've read that they have 'adaptogenic' properties in humans. That means that they allow the nervous system to adapt quicker and better to different situations- mainly stressful ones, I guess. SO, I would assume they're helpful for anxiety- I tried the pill extract of the reishi but it didn't give noticable effects; maybe you need to eat the fresh mushroom to get the benfits.

i grind reishi and maitake collected in the wild into small chuncks and steep in very hot water for 10 minutes to make tea. the maitake works better for me- but your mileage may vary.
nice reishi find!

Thanks guys!
So what proportions for the tea? How much fresh mushroom to water?
How about tinctures? How much fresh mushroom to alcohol?

i believe you have ganoderma tsugae in those pics- a close cousin of ganoderma lucidum, which is the true reishi ,and ganoderma oregonense.

for maitake or reishi tea i chunk or grind up about 1/4 cup of mushroom and steep in a tea mug, strain then drink. I have never made an extraction of either mushroom. Some wild maitake encase dirt in their flesh and are impossible to clean and eat fresh...so i started using the dried maitake to make broths and teas just to get some use out of them...and i personally benefit greatly from medicinal mushroom tea when i feel run down or a cold starting.

Ganoderma tsugae, lucidum, and oregonese all have the medicinal properties. There's very little difference between them. In fact, G oregonese is often reported to be the most beneficial. It's also the largest.

Someone on here suggested boiling the dried reishi with dried dates to help mask the bitterness. One thing I can assure you is that you won't enjoy reishi for the taste.

Pawling, NY... went with mamma so we didn't go too far... hiked about 15 miles or so. there are SO many different kinds of shrooms along the trail its incredible. i saw Russula Xeramplina, old man of the woods or Strobilomyces floccopus, cotinarius violaceus or cortinarius alboviolaceus, crepidotus sp., Laetiporus Sulphureus, Laetiporus Sulphureus in prime eating condition and Russula mariae or Russula alachuana (thanks to someone who IDed them for me).

When the fruit is growing, there will be a soft white fleshy area on the leading edge. This is where you'll take your clones from should you wish to grow reishi. When the fruit has finished growing, it will be red right to the edge. They begin to rot shortly afterward.
