Bluing Mushroom in Texas
    #734286 - 07/09/02 02:52 PM (22 years, 7 months ago)

I found 2 of these growing from dirt, under a cedar tree in a cow pasture. They Blue Out like mad when damaged in about 5 seconds. Theye are about 3 inches tall, an orange/brown color when I first picked them, and have NO GILLS...They have a spongy bottom instead of a gilled one. They dont smell at all...seem very, very solid, and like I said...BLUE LIKE MAD WHEN DAMAGED

Hey there,

I actually think they are might be red-cracked boletes. I get them under my oak tree here in Tejas and I ID'ed them with Audobon Society Mushrooms of North America handbook. The one you have does look like a King Bolete due to the size of the stem. Kings blue also. The ones I found blue almost instantly like the bluing bolete but the spore print was the wrong color and when mature they looked like the red-cracked going off center on the cap.... . The Bluing bolete has a yellow spore print, straw colored cap and is quite edible. The red-cracked has a olive to olive-brown spore print as has the King. The King has a "fatass" stem...many of the bolete's are very similar with stalk and and cap texture used to differentiate them from each other. I am no expert for sure....

Best regards,

KingBolete

Do you have a spore print? Depending on the color of the spores, there may be details about the stem and/or pores that are important. Once that information is available it should be possible to get to the correct genus.

Happy mushrooming!
