I'm not sure exactly what your questions is: if you don't case, you just place the birthed cakes into a terrarium. If you case you have to break up the cakes by crumbling or slicing them. Or, you can use a spawn filter bag colonization/casing. Are you saying that you are wondering whether you can just place the whole,intact cake into a casing mix? What would be the benefits?

The inside of the cakes will become exposed. All portions not covered with white mycelium (sp) stand a very good chance of becoming contaminated. This is bad. There are no preservatives in the cake that will protect it from contams. So, the possibility is very likely. If you feel like experimenting try it but if they become contaminated just trow them out. Later
