here's what i do. i tighten the lids down, i tape the lids, and i check the water 2 or 3 times. i usually have to add water. i set off the smoke detector once because the water steamed away and i didn't know it :smile:

i dont tighten down the lids TIGHT but i snugg them up and i use new lids each time to ensure once i tighen them there will be no invasion of bacteria untill i inject them....and make sure when u add water to the pot BRING IT TO A BOIL IN ANOTHER POT FIRST so you wont crack your jars

When I sterilized my jars, I tightened the lids down all the way so that there was a guarantee that no water would be able to get in throught there. But I did leave my holes open because if the pressure inside from the air expanding the jar my crack or explode, just be sure to put one or two layers of untorn aluminum foil over the top and crumple it up tightly.

will it be ok if i tighten them down hand tight, AND tape the lids? I figure there will be less chance of contams...and if pressure does get too high, i think the tape would go before the glass breaks right?
