I know I've seen Fountain posts on here, but I just saw the movie for the first time, and instead of bumping an old thread. I just figured I would write about it here.

Damn that movie was wild. Real 2001ish. It's an amazing concept. A real unique look at death.

The concept is subjective. That is, different people will take different things away from the movie.


To me, the entire film is a meditation on death, in it's many hypothetical forms.

Yeah that movies was super fucked up. Half of the time I didn't really know what was going on because they kept switching between different time frames. The part that I didn't get the most was with the tree. Good movie I just think it could have been longer and explained more.

There are three intertwined stories (all starring Hugh Jackman), a spanish conquistador sent by the Queen of Spain to find the tree of life hidden in an ancient Mayan civilization. A present day? (may in the near future) doctor whose wife is fatally ill, who is driving himself insane trying to find a cure for her disease before she dies, however she has already began her enlightenment and is no longer afraid to die, and set in the future, a bald man meditating and conversing with himself in a space orb with the tree of life, heading up into the nebula where the ancient mayan civilization prayed to in the sky, the star they prayed to to be reborn. Each shot was beautiful. Aronofsky is really making himself to be a true artist, and one of the last few directors of his kind left.

The concept (to me) was that we are souls, and when we die, we take a step toward enlightenment. "Death is the road to awe". We live several times in many forms, but there really is no time structure. That was never really explained. Nor was the rest, so I guess it really is all subjective. We are always afraid of death, but each time we die, we get closer to godlike wisdom because we learn so much through the process of dying.

And behind the man is the same woman in her different forms. She provides inspiration. She has a mysterious control over the man's behavior without doing anything other than inspire. We basically live forever, but our consciousness comes in different forms.

It may be confusing and a little slow at times, but if you like 2001 and movies that have a deeper subjective thought underlying the story line. Definitely check this one out.

i downloaded this movie after seeing the thread, i watched and i have to say i was amazed by the film. it was awesome. not saying i grasped the whole idea, but it was one of the best movies i have seen in a while.

The Fountain is without a doubt the best film I have seen this year.

I enjoyed it even more the second time I watched it.

i didn't really like it, then again when i watched it i was blasted on 180 mgs of oxy or so. Needless to say it's very frustrating nodding out, coming to, and realizing you have no idea what's going on. Sadly i deleted it from my HD because the end of the movie was missing.

i was addicted for a long while, so ya, i had a pretty big tolerance. It wasn't uncommon to go over 200 mg's in a night.

no, i self detoxed at the beginning of june/end of may of this year. 3-4 weeks of agony and then another 5-6 of being clean. I recently started using again but so far have kept everything under wraps. It's been a long time since a single 30 mg roxy got me blasted, but it did, and besides a nasty opiate hangover the next day i haven't dealt with any issues. I binged a bit on dilaudid this past wkd with my gf, but i just can't say no to free opiates. Still after doing around 100 mgs of dilaudid over 4 days i feel not even the slightest twinge of wanting more.

Im trying to keep it to a once in a blue moon thing and it's working, i know the signs now of when im slipping and i know i have it in me to stop cold turkey if i need to. It's not fun quitting a drug that carries a physical dependence, it was the first and hopefully last time i ever had to do it. When you get actually dead scared about leaving town and being away from your oxy source for a few days you know you have a bad problem, that and i had to seriously hide my usage that wkd because i was with people who don't like oxy users (i told my one friend i was an addict and he almost punched me in the face, needless to say we had a long talk that night) and it made me feel really slimey and low that i had to sneak around and lie to people about why i needed to run back to my condo for a min.

Oh well, lesson learned.

The only thing I liked about the fountain was the way it looked. The lighting was amazing.

but i felt the story-line was just too esoteric. I felt like it just made a lot of symbolic ties within the movie, but never explained them in any way, and kind of hoped that, like the emporers new clothes, people would be compelled to claim they liked it for fear of being considered dense.

I find it so funny that the majority of people who liked this movie, go on about how much they hated "Crash" and "primer" and how much they liked "Donnie Darko".

I feel the same way about donnie darko, everytime I watch it I feel like a 16 year old wrote it thinking that he was some philosophical prodigy... when in reality it was a horrible plot line obscured by being vague and supported with great visuals.

One thing I will concede is that out of the 3 times I have seen the fountain, it has done nothing for me other than be eye candy.... and maybe I am not watching it the right way....
because the way some of you feel about this movie is the way I feel about primer, crash and Lost in Translation, and find myself trying to explain to people how deep and amazing these movies are.

but, i have watched donnie darko so many times , hoping to "get" it, that I can honestly opine that it sucks.

why does it make you better/smarter/more philosophical to like primer, crash, and lost in translation compared to The Fountain or Donny Darko? :rolleyes:

One could say the same thing about you regarding The Fountain. Perhaps, the movie was intended not explain anything, and propose questions to the viewer. Maybe it was intended for the audience to take what they will, and make it into something they can relate to.

Why you think your high and mighty for thinking your deeper than next guy because they don't like certain movies...:lol:

The way I interpreted the movie after several viewings was that the only real story was the present day story with the doctor. The rest of the movie was, i.e. the conquistador was about his journey to save his wife and cheat death. The space portion was about how death wasnt to be feared and it is actually a rebirth. The tree scene in the end represented how he would be one with his wife forever, but not in the way that he intially expected i.e. not physicallly the same and curing her, however always together in memory and love. You have to combine the stories such that it is about coping with death and finally reaching enlightenment by not fearing it and accepting it. It's a beautiful concept as it is very non-linear and makes you really think. But there is evidence in the film to support some of these ideas. For instance his wife is writing a book about the conquistador story, this is in his mind throughout and just the decorations in his house relate to the earlier time period story. Then combined with the fact that she never finished the book intentionally I thought was amazing. She left the ending for her husband to finish so he could cope with her death. She accepted her death and she wanted to provide a graceful mechanism to prevent her husband from suffering.

My bad about this long incohesive rant but I'm rather tired and I honestly love that movie. Its so different than most other things out there.
