a question i cannot find addressed

Ok, i had a bright red liquidy contam the was forming on my rice on my cakes during colonization. Numerous people are trying to rule this out as metabolites but I feel it is not, it was not coming out of the mycelium and metabolites are usually not spotted until the cake is near or fully colonized. Also I believe it is a bacteria of some sort, not a mold, because it did not seem to hinder the progress of fruiting. Now my question is that it seems to be getting sucked into the stipes of my fruits and traveling up the insides of the stems! During colonization it eventually went from bright red spots "ON THE RICE" and when the mycelium enveloped it, it turned a rusty brown as it battled it out with the rhizomorphs, now upon cutting upon some stems there is actually a bright red to rusty brown bacterial looking something growing inside the stems!, even if i through them right off the fresh pick directly into the dehydrator at 150 and let them dry i can snap open the stems and the whole inside looks disgusting like red to rusty brown, and the fibers feel physically decayed and spongy to powdery as you bust them up. Now i feel people are confusing metabolites with bacterial contam in my case, unfortunately i cannot offer any pictures of the red blotches that were there during colonization as it is now fully colonized, just my personal feelings here though is that bacterial contam seems to be transversed into the shrooms stipes and possibly the caps very easily, and i would imagine for this reason very dangerous possibly, i have seen others speak of the same thing i have on there cakes as well, now if it is on the rice on a partially colonized cake, and not sweating out of the mycelium, i really don't see how this could be metabolites?! Any opinions? I know this should probably be in the contam threads but they didn't reply, here is two pics of two picks a couple days ago that went directly of the cake into my dehydrator at 135 140 until dry, observe the nasty brown rot inside the stem! and then tell me what i had was metabolites

Post the pictures here so I can see them. I won't click offsite images. What I can see from the thumbnails looks fine. I've often seen bright red metabolites, and it's normal for the fruits to brown as they dry.

Red, in the context of contaminants, usually means mold, not bacteria.



"Lipstick mold", pictured above. Geotrichum candidum. It's pretty rare. Clean up, spray some Lysol liberally, and with some luck you shouldn't see it again. Like trich and other molds, its color tends to darken with time, which could explain it turning to a brownish tint.

Not a diagnosis, but a good guess. Metabolites aren't out of the question; it's all a matter of just what it looks like. I don't think you'd see sporulating (tinted) mold on the inside of a fruit, though. What you would probably see would be really soft, ugly, brownish tissue wherever the mold has taken root. Is that what you're describing? I actually don't think you'd see fruits at all, if this were the culprit, but then mushrooms can come out of even the unhealthiest cakes, so you never know.

ok, now you can see it, mushrooms brown as they dry on the outside but and brown throughout the inner flesh is not good in my experience and that pic looks grotesque to say the least...it sort of looked like that geotrich but it was not mold like or sporalating would be my guess it was gelatnious like but i really don't see how this could be metabolites if it was seperate from the mycelium during colonization? whatever it is if it is not geotrich, it follows it color patterns to a T, it starts cherry bright red, and turns to rusty brown, it just didn't look mold like (fuzzy dry) it looked liquidy...but my guess would be it was geotrich at this point i really don't know, but it inhabits the insides of the stems all the way up to the cap, not just at the base, which makes me think bacterial contam on one hand.

I've never seen bacterial contams cause rotting of the actual shrooms from the center to the cap. Usually, when it's that serious, it causes rot while they're still tiny and they all abort. I can't speak for everybody though.

you gotta agree that that pic there is something in that stem though? It's like shit brown lol, and it was promptly dehydrated immediately after being picked, i have many others like this too. it seems most that come out show this "rot" very much some show it very little but still some sort of rusty brown inside the stem is visible on almost all of them. i gotta start cuttin them open fresh and checking things out then

also note a highly bacterial smell from the inside of the stipes, almost like stinky feet, but far worse unfortunately, odor declines with drying

yeah i didn't have the heart to toss cakes that were fruiting so well, i don't know if whatever it was had anything to do with this but i was getting some gargantuan sized b+'s, i'm talking some over 12" long with like a inch in diamiter stems or larger at the bases, monster caps too, never had results like that but had them in tubs outside for the first time too not inside, maybe natural light, cool nights, possibly...
