Casing Question

my friend is about to start casing, he has 8 jars that are fully colonized and they have been forming pinheads for about 4 days now. The pins are probbaly a lot bigger now. My question is if he cases them now and just takes all the pins off will that reduce the yields, or act as a first flush or something? and does using more cakes in the casing increase yields? like if he uses 2 cakes in the casing will it do the same if he uses 4?

That depends on how you case. If you leave the cake whole, the mycelial net will remain in-tact and you'll be off to a head start. If you crumble the cakes and form them into a layer, it will take some time for them to recover.
There are many trade-offs to consider. Crumbling will probably result in better substrate efficiency in the long run (if the casing makes it through the long run), while not crumbling will probably get faster results.
Make sense?

makes sense but it didnt answer my question, i wanna know if removing all the early mushrooms that formed inside the jars before i case, will lower my yields. like if i pick them all off then case will that count as a first flush?

Regarding the yields the answer is perhaps. If you can case the answer is yes, and read the thread "? Question" on this forum main page, allmost the same question.... bah... !! http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=360624&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&part=1#Post360648
