I got a few dead trees in my backyard, I took a picture of one, Im thinking of letting vines takeover these trees, my rivea or passiflora seeds will make it here first.


You think the vines would take these trees over nicely and make it look lively again? Il have a grow log in my journal and here when i start them.

The passiflora would look cool taking the tree over, but passiflora doesn't really need anything to wrap on, it can be a free vine on the ground.

my passiflora are kinda slow...but rivea should cover that sucker within a year.

i disagree, to fully cover that would be 3 years at least for a rivea... mine was only 2-3ft tall after 2 years :shrug:

i guess it depends on your climate too...

Some of my riveas have gotten bigger than that, but I agree that it would take longer to cover it. Once they get going they are pretty quick. If you are in a warm climate where it will be a perennial I would still go for it because eventually it will cover it and look nice. Otherwise, passiflora is more cold hardy and I would go with that. You're planning to prepare the soil around the base of the tree, right?

Im in zone 9, im gonna start them in pots first until they get a foot or so tall. Cptn did u give ur rivea something to grow on/up?

Hmmm. That's a tough one. That's about the border line for rivea hardiness. I may go with the passiflora instead. I have riveas growing on handrails, but they will die in the winter.

ya perhaps a tad cold. but you can try it out, who knows.

my riveas right now grow about 5 feet/month. they grow damned fast if your in a warm place (12 month growing season). but that climate if they can survive, you will have lots of die back, and shorter growing season.

Well acctually im on the border line of zone 9 and 10. Im in florida, its not really cold here.

yea gotta remember it gets 50 or below durin some winters tho. how do yall think that kinda temp. would affect the growth of rivea. and how well would the passiflora do?

i think rivea will tolerate 50, thats like 5 Celsius right? dont expect much growth and a perky plant, but i can see it thriving. it got unusually cold here, down to 6 C (lol, not cold at all but is for here) fr a week and it didn't do any harm at all. how long is it cold for there?

kada just about year round here id say the temps are 80+, except winter when we we will drop to 50s, rarely 30s.

30's? what is freezing in F? i dont know if they could take freezing temps, especially frost. maybe the roots would survive? or protected parts like stems covered by more growth? certainly slow growth down.

well i mean it raarely gets 30s i think i can remember one time in the past few years went that low. I think our winters is mostly high 40s low 50s. and thats what we call cold. but i dont pay too much attention to temps. Its just about always hot here. and sunny.

32 degrees is freezing in F, and yea it rarely frosts, like sub said tho it usually stays in the 40's-50's for maybe 2 to 3 months. but gets roughly 60 deg. durning mid day durin the cold periods

riveas are from mexico.

if anyone doesnt know, it may be hot in the day there, but it gets 40-50 at night on average in mexico

i dont think anyone should have problems cultivating riveas in florida, its along the same line of tropics as the northern parts of mexico

rivea also blow HBWR away, far away. good luck.
