Germinating Passiflora incarnata

So I've traded out a lot of Maypop (Passiflora incarnata) seeds over the past couple of weeks, and I've gotten a few requests for a guide to germinating them. 

To begin with, all Passifloras have a very hard seed coat. This means that they are going to have very erratic germination.  The shelf-life on Passiflora incarnata is good.  Seeds will live in soil for up to 5 years, and may germinate at any time.  Which is great if you want to wait around for 5 years. 

Probably your best bet for fast germination is going to be filing in through the seed coat (use a nail file or something similar), and a 24 hour soak in water. If you choose not to file, a longer soak would be better, provided you change the water such that it doesn't get cloudy (once or twice a day should be sufficient.

I've *heard* some people recommend soaking seeds in Hard Cider (3-5% ABV).  I can't vouch for this, but the theory is that Abscisic acid (the growth suppressant in seeds) is more soluble in ethanol than it is in water, so this leeches it out more effectively.  I'd be eager to hear some of the Shroomery chemists refute or endorse this, based on the structure of Abscisic acid.  However, when soaking in alcohol solutions, be careful, as >10% ABV will probably kill your seeds.

From what I can tell, soil temperature is the germination trigger once seeds have been soaked sufficiently.  This is a species that would greatly benefit from a little bit of gentle bottom heat.  Say the 80-90 degree F range. 

Questions are welcome. I will try to best aid you with my horticultural expertise.  I will admit that I have never germinated P. incarnata, but I have germinated other Passifloras before using similar methods (long soaks, warm soil).  You're going to have a bit of patience with these things. They're certainly not beans or sunflowers.  But if you treat them right, you will be rewarded with flowers your first growing season, and a plant that will come back from rhizome every year after that.

Rather then filing seeds I use a cigar cutter to clip the tips off either end with good results.

I found the best way to germinate them is the following:

1)Soak two paper towels in warm water
2)Place one peace of paper towel on a small plate
3)Place seeds on towel and sandwich them with the other towel.
4)Cover with another plate and place in a ziplock baggie (or wrap in cligfilm)
5)Leave seeds in a warm place between 25-30C
6)Check every two days or so
7)Once a root (5mm+) has sprouted from the seed you are ready to go
