The Maypop Experiment - Passiflora Incarnata
    #16394569 - 06/17/12 11:16 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

So close to where I live tons of wild maypops or passion flowers can be found. I wanted to conduct a very loose experiment with this plant to identify and calibrate the effectiveness of it alone and the MAO inhibitors found within the plant in conjunction with other substances.

#1 Preliminary testing
Made a batch of brew from 22 flowers. Processed the flowers, boiled for 5 min steeped for 5min, strained and split with a friend. Tea turned out rather light and tan colored. Tastes like earthy cabbage, not terrible or great.

15min pass - I feel a little less inhibited. Laughing for no apparent reason.
30min pass - I am relaxed and the floor seems like a cozy place to chill. Guitar music sounds especially good. My eyes keep wandering - lucid thoughts.
1hour pass - Driving home I feel cozy and that's about it.
- Also had some awesome dreams that night, which isn't too rare for me.

Conclusion: Although I "felt" something I could possibly attribute these symptoms to placebo effect. The effects (if any) I would compare to the strength of a cigarette buzz or having two drinks.

So I'm not impressed but there is potential here. The next step is combining smoking dried flowers/leaves with a freshly brewed tea. This new tea I brewed with roughly 70+flowers and 50+ leaves. It was strained and cooked down to roughly 3/4 a gallon. The tea is much darker and I assume it roughly 5x-7x strength.

Let you know what happens on Test #2 and eventually see how it reacts with possibly psilocybin or THC.

I don't think you were experiencing a placebo it is medicinally used for the effects you experienced, used as herbal remedy for anxiety and depression found it in the same section as Rhodiola Rossea. It's midly narcotic which explains the the laughing and stuff. Be careful though, I have been researching the plant recently and found that there was a case of one girl drinking to much of it and (can't remember the term) but her heart was having a hard time pumping blood to her brain although they reckon there was some underlying medical condition.
I live in the uk and would love to germinate and sustain this plant in zone 3 (I think i am zone 3)

I also heard that if you drink enough of it...it takes back through time...is this true? :takingnotes:

If you make a tea with a lot of material, there is almost no question that you will feel the effects, although they will be mild. Drinking a strong tea while smoking the plant sounds promising...

Well,I no longer experiment with such things, but I made a Huge batch of tea, with like a pound of fresh flowers, and I smoked a blunt of the leaves, about five years ago,and I pretty much just got a headache. Not saying it doesn't work,it just never did for me:-)

Last night I engaged in Test #2

- Before I go into detail There ARE things to avoid using like antidepressants and alcohol. There are quite a few other things aswell so study up before you indulge.

So for test #2 I drank roughly 35ozs of my new batch of much stronger tea. (It is worth mentioning I don't know what "strong" means in the context of passiflora incarnata- refer to original post) Previously to this I smoked a hefty .7g (estimated) spliff after I finished some good vigorous exercise. Both the tea and smoking were concluding within about a 30min window giving plenty of time for the effects to compound.

The smoke was surprisingly pleasant, a little harsh at times but had a favorable taste. Similar to very mild bud.

10min - So I finish smoking to no noticeable effect and pour my first glass of tea. Head feels a little fuzzy, nothing else.
15min - First glass done still feeling nothing- next glass.
20min - Finished second glass and hoping for something...anything?

Ultimately my much increased dosage and combining with smoking did not produce any noticeable effect. I was relaxed but I had also just done some intense exercise. My head did feel mildly fuzzy and I did seem to have some mildly delayed reactions - perhaps from the sedative effects. However, it did not even make me feel tired.

Conclusion: I cannot believe the tea I made was not strong enough. So I will rule out not taking enough... I believe that I just have a high tolerance to the mystery active ingredient or my chemistry isn't conducive to it's effects. Perhaps I am not a good candidate because a large dosage didn't even make me feel tired, which it is documented to do. However, despite the let down of anything worthwhile I did enjoy the spliff and it was nice for an irregular smoker like myself as opposed to tobacco.

I may try another production technique before I try combining anything else.

Peace for now ^_^
