Rye Grain or Birdseed
    #718177 - 07/02/02 04:02 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I want to try new substrates for my casing, as I'm finding out that the ol' BRF is not optimal for most applications, and less cost effective as well. I am wondering what people prefer, Rye, or birdseed. What type of birdseed and rye should be used? I have read posts involving two different types of rye, what are they? Do both use the 24hr soak in their weight in water and then sterelize for an hour?? I appreciate all help.

I have never tried rye but I use Pennington's Finch Food. I think the key ingredient is millet in the birdseed.

I have used both. I started with birdseed and had so many problems it wasn't even funny. I now use rye grain and it seems like a miracle in comparison. The problems with birdseed (and I've used 3 different kinds) that I've encountered are: 1) Lots of Bascillus (aka Wetspot). You can minimise this by prewashing the seed, but that just brings us to.... 2) Messy!!!. It floats, it's small, it falls through standard-sized collanders (strainers), and it sticks to your hand when you try to wash everything around.

Since I've started using rye grain jar preparation has been so much easier. It absorbs water perfectly, and because it is larger it's very easy to rinse in a strainer. And it seems to me like it colonizes slightly faster.

Dankman is correct...when looking for birdseed you want it to have lots of white millet. I've never used birdseed before and only rye. I've never soaked or preboiled my rye. Soaking the rye for the first 24h usually lets it suck up some water and also alows endospores to germinates (they become easier to sterilize). Preboiling will bring your rye up to proper moisture content. I've always just added the rye and the water in a jar, shaken it, and pressure cooker for 1hour. Read:

they both seem fine to me ,the key in grain is sterilization and the right water ratio
find some good tek and you should have no problems
