ever have your rye grain get all hard after you pressure cook it so that you cant get the syringe in it? i'm thinking i should put less water and rye grain in because the rye grain seems to expand when it is cooked in the pressure cooker

Well, how much rye are you using in what size jar?
Then you shouldn?t use much more than 100g rye in a pint jar, if you want it shakeable.

I'm using a 1/2 pint jar and i'm filling it 1/2 way with water and 1/2 way with rye. leaving 1" of space at the top. should i leave more space? when i cook it in the pressure cooker, it seems to make it pack down so hard :( I'm going to get some brf later, i just wanted to try one more jar with the rye

hahaha I had a similar problem, though I left a bit more room than you, my rye still expanded quite a bit more than I expected. probably only want to have the jars half full or less with the rye and water in there.... thankfully dispite some rye spilling out the top when I went to innoculate only lost 2 jars to contams and the rest are at 95% colonized now ;)
I'm pretty lucky... actually dumped excess rye out of a couple of jars durring innoculation, but I had created a sterile chamber to work in so wasnt tooo worried about contams.

i suggest cooking the grain with water before PCing. a most excellent way of doing this can be found at http://www.micronmagick.com/index.cfm?fuseAction=teks&tek=grain

Expect a 3x expansion on rye..
