Rye grain spawn * 1
    #1267285 - 02/01/03 04:38 AM (21 years, 19 hours ago)

I have colonized jars of rye grain in a cooler at 86 degrees.
After a month 2 seemed to fully colonize, and I prepared more jars to seed.
When I shook the jar I want to use as the mother, it no longer looked colonized (ie. white disappeared and it now just looks like rye grain).
I read the FAQ (I wish I had done this some time ago!) and now realize that I should have been shaking the jars from time to time to spread out the growth. Also, I should have left the lids on the jars loose.
My problem now is I have the new jars prepared and I'm not sure If I can use the mother jar I selected without letting it grow further.
Should I let the mother jar grow again until it covers the outside of the jar again?
If I have to, can I keep the jars I just pressure cooked until the mother is ready?

Can't wait to look back on this and laugh but I have a lot to learn.

Thanks,

JFC

A month seems like an awful lomg time for a grain jar to colonize, my BS jars are ready in as little as 2 weeks...

I realize that it took too long.
I imagine that the fact I had the lids tightened and I did not shake the jars slowed things down.
What I need to know is: should I let the jar re colonize after my shaking broke up the white stuff (and now it looks like normal rye grain)?
And if I do, can I keep the jars I just pressure cooked until I need them, or should I dump 'em and get more rye grain when the mother turns white on the outside again?
