what is "cracker dry"?

I'm sun drying (and occasional fanning) my first GT harvest. After 8 hours of 30C sun on a hamok net kind-of-thing (anyway it means they get draughts from underneath too) they're not what I'd call "cracker dry". You can still bend them. Is "cracker day" a reality or an ideal?

I've thought about getting a dehumidifyer but if the sun can do it just as well, why bother?

I'm not that bothered about dryness except I wonder if it might mess up dosages.

lol oxidation decreases potency so the longer you let em "oxidize" the worse.Cracker dry is when you bend it , it cracks like a cracker would.get a dehydrator (nesco,snackmaster)and let your worries be a thing of the past.

I think you mean dehydrator.

If your shrooms are in direct sunlight while they are drying this could affect the potency.

Yes cracker dry is a reality, not just a dream, they should just snap, and crumble into powder.

I like to have them as dry as possible for a few reasons,
IMO they are nicer to eat when crunchy not chewy , The weight can vary a bit if they are still moist, so this means the dosage will vary but not much.
And If you keep a few ounce of semi-dry or moist shrooms in a sealed bag they are going to start breaking down, loosing potency, then rot..
They will stay fresher and keep their potency longer if they are "cracker dry" or crunchy, and well sealed in a bag.



If you are storing ounces for long periods of time, put the cracker dry shroom in a vacuum sealed bag with some desiccant, they will stay good for months or even years.

I was thinking of mixing the powder with honey (sounds tasty). But do you think it would dissolve quick enough? Or is orange juice a better bet for a fast come on?

A fan in a box with some desiccant will do the job of a dehydrator if you're skint. Cracker dry means when you squeeze a cap between your fingers it will resist, be rock hard and finally snap with pressure.

Desiccant costs $$$ and presumably has to be replaced regularly.

I'll probably go the dehydrator route if it's really true sun drying decreases potency.

Or just use some other electric machine that produces heat. I dry my shrooms on top of my computer monitor, which is powered on many hours per day anyway. The best way to dry shrooms IMHO is not to heat the shrooms themselves by radiation (like the sun), but to let dry warm air pass over them (and under if possible).

Dosage will vary anyway, from fruit to fruit... but they will keep their potency much better. If cracker dry and stored in a dark place, they can keep for years. If they feel dry but bend without snapping, they will lose most of their potency after just a few months.

Mushroom tea with lemon or orange juice is the fastest and easiest way for me. Alcohol tincture may be even faster, but it's more work to prepare.

Mix the tea with orange juice? Sounds a bit weird. I'd invisaged powdering the shrooms in a coffee grinder then just mixing them with juice.

Yep, I squeeze fresh juice from a lemon or an orange into the tea while it is boiling. Then I filter the liquid and drink it. The remaining stuff I throw away, it isn't worth eating. All the goodies are in the liquid.

first of all, we do this simple step of drying because if we leave the mushrooms with any moisture left in them, they will spoil just like any other food left out. so drying preserves. last week i fan dried one until kinda bend-y, then left it out over night and it re-hydrated and started spoiling. heres how to preserve and prevent my mistake...

i have a small desk fan. i point it at the fresh mushrooms for ~24 hours and they become dry and hard (cracker). and this is done in the humid south. thing is, i dont want them under fan for weeks, (just inconvenient) so i bought a half pound of desiccant for $3 online, was delivered in 4 days, and i store the fan-dried shrooms with some desiccant put in a coffee filter to act as a tea bag of desiccant. i use this like any other is used, so i just put my shrooms in a shoe box as i harvest one by one after drying to join the desiccant in the storage shoe box.
summary:

1.pick
2.fan dry (right next to the fan, less than a foot away) for ~24 hours until non-bendy.
3.get desiccant in reasonable container (coffee filter or original bag)
4.put dry mushrooms and desiccant bag into box next to each other. close box.

Sorry, why is the tea boiling? I never drink normal tea but I imagine you boil the water in a kettle then pour it into a tea pot with a sort of metal filter ball(?) which holds the loose tea and let it infuse into the hot water. You wouldn't boil tea, would you?

$5 for 2l and you use about 100ml per dry. I didn't buy the fan or the box and it uses no heat which is better for potency.

i just place my shrooms in a lazagna pan and put it on the fridge, Now and then il leave my fridge door open for a couple mins to get the motor kicking again. The heat from the top of the fridge seems to dry my shrooms out damn good, Cracker dry in 2-3 days.

Thanks for the idea, Rhizoid. I was using the box to sun dry them. Now I've punched another hole in the bottom and they're getting fan dried by a computer which is on 24/7 anyway.

Very eco-friendly! :wink:

PS. It's nightime now where I am, but is it official that a warm fan is better for drying than the sun? (better for potency)

Right, you don't boil tea made from the "tea" plant (camellia sinensis), but some herbal teas are boiled. Some people boil mushroom tea, some don't. My own mushroom tea recipe is described in more detail in this post. There are other recipes in the same thread (and in several other threads).

If you haven't tried mushroom tea with lemon juice before, be warned that it can be twice as intense as when you chew and swallow the same amount of shrooms. So if you use a normal dose to make the tea, drink half of it only, and then drink the rest after about an hour.

It's an offical rumour that sunlight breaks down psilocybin :smile:. I honestly don't know if it makes any noticeable difference when drying mushrooms in the sun for a day or two. I wouldn't take the risk myself without knowing for sure, at least not with the whole harvest at once.
