Excellent point..

As far as this idea goes, it's based on what seems to be an assumption that the people who have died consumed the mushrooms after smoking a drinking and therefore weren't in the proper mindset (which some would argue is kind of a ridiculous idea anyway.) Can you back that up with fact or no? Who's to say that they aren't just going to drink and smoke and take mushrooms after the wait because they make the decision that they want to get obliterated while they're sober, not drunk/high?

The smoking/drinking was just one example, really. It was more based on the idea that a lot of people get to Amsterdam, hear mushrooms are legal, and want to try them just because they are legal, and don't really know what they are getting themselves into.

Or, locals could just cultivate them and sell them, defeating the purpose of legalization.

I think education (whether it's in the form of pamphlets or something else) is the only way to curb irresponsible use.  A waiting period may have benefits, but I am hesitant to support such an initiative because to me it sounds like we are conceding that mushrooms are an inherently dangerous substance.  It draws an ugly parallel between psilocybin and guns.  It just seems like a step backward in global drug policy reform.

I think it's obvious that this recent rash of news articles is a result of somebody's (not sure which organization's) engineered anti-drug campaign, and are not commonplace incidents.  There are always few details, but they never forget to mention that the person took mushrooms.  It has come out now that the guy who killed the dog was a bona fide nutcase, but the damage has been done; all over the world right now there are high school kids telling each other that mushrooms make you stab animals.

Oi.

Dog-killer was not on mushrooms

16 July 2007

AMSTERDAM – The Frenchman who killed his dog in Amsterdam on Friday was most likely not under the influence of mushrooms at the time.

Regional health authorities say he was in a psychotic state at the time, a spokesperson said on Monday. The man himself had claimed to have taken hallucinogenic mushrooms.

A spokesperson for the health authorities says that a psychiatric evaluation indicates that his actions were not the result of taking hallucinogenic mushrooms.

That's a fantastic idea. Not only for Amsterdam, but as a method for safely legalising psychedelics in other countries, too. I live in the UK, and the reason mushrooms got banned here had a lot to do with their irresponsible sale and purchase.

Any fool walking past the stalls and shops would be offered mushrooms and allowed to purchase them, no questions asked. Fantastic as this may seem on the surface, it does lead to fools destroying themselves and giving psychedelics a bad name. 17 year olds on mushrooms crashing cars and what not. A waiting period would really help prevent that kind of thing happening. Good idea.

The publicity from the tourists fucking up isn't anyone's fault.  I like the pamphlets and educational approach, though.  Be cool if they had trip guides that encouraged set and setting as well as providing a chill and contageous element to the group collective.

Sucks they feel they need to change things and hopefuly they won't have to.

but if they keep it up they ruin it for everyone.

Here's a better idea: you're only allowed to buy shrooms if your IQ is above 80. Only complete retards get themselves killed.

But really, they should just do a better job of informing people the nature of shrooms. It's not meant to get you 'fucked up,' but to expand your mind. OR they could just ask if they've ever tried them before. If they haven't, they have to be in the presence of some one who has, or the amount they're allowed to buy should be limited to like 2 grams.

How does waiting 5 days increase somebody's knowledge about "what they are getting themselves into" when taking a psychedelic? I realize the waiting period is supposed to allow people to become knowledgeable about the effects, but reading pamphlets is not mandatory.

And as someone else hinted at; if I'm so drunk, high, and stoned that I leap to my death after consuming mushrooms, why does it matter if I do it on the first day of my vacation or the fifth?

No filter is 100 percent effective. Does that render them irrelevant and not helpful?

No, but then you need to consider at what point being "helpful" starts to limit a person's essential rights.

If you are heading in the direction of "education" I feel there are better ways to ensure somebody actually pays attention to the material they are presented.

In this case there is a good chance someone will wait 5 days for their mushrooms, throw away their pamphlet upon leaving the store and only delay the potential harms of psilocybin by 3-5 days.

What rights do you have when purchasing goods from a shop? You have the right to hand over money and buy the product on the shop owner's terms.

I fully understand that. There will always be irresponsible people, and stupid ones too. There is no stopping that.

If anything they are meant to produce psilocybin as an evolutionary mechanism to keep animals away from eating them. Who are you to say whether or not it's okay for people to take them to get fucked up.

I don't think they are 'meant' to be anything.  That would imply some sort of divine will is responsible for their biology.  Mutations do not occur with a purpose; they just occur. Some traits happen to be useful to an organism, and thus are developed and refined through natural selection, some are neutral (and perhaps interesting  ) and some are detrimental.

However helpful the presence of psychoactive compounds is to a mushroom, I'm glad they have that trait. :yesnod:

It's an interesting idea. There has to be an improvement in the way smartshops operate.

btw, about 95% of all incidents with shrooms in Amsterdam are because of tourists. Banning sales to tourists would probably be the most effective way to reduce probems.

People should be forced to sign a legal disclaimer in the shop.

If people had to sign a legal document which had the words:

"In the case of your death or injury this shop is not accountable for any responsibilty!"

at the top of them, in bold letters, maybe they'd think a little bit more about how they're going use those mushrooms.
