Fresh magic mushrooms will be legally on sale in Neath from Thursday. But fresh khat, a legal form of crack cocaine notorious for causing hallucinations and possibly cancer, will be kept off the shelves.

Piet Manca, the owner of Neath's high street sex aids and drug smoking emporium - Little Amsterdam in Windsor Road - said he was growing the mushrooms to meet the demand.

He said: "It is illegal to sell dried magic mushrooms but not fresh. We have checked and decided to grow our own supplies and keep them refrigerated on the premises to make sure they do not fall foul of the law."

Mr Manca flew to Holland last night to investigate how to run Amsterdam-style coffee shops.

"I want to open one of these on my premises in Windsor Road because business is booming and I want to expand," said Mr Manca.

He also confirmed he had been approached by customers but had refused to supply a legal form of crack in this country called khat, outlawed all over Europe.

The African shrub, also known as Abyssinian tea, is available in many social clubs around the country.

Users claim chewing the plant's long thin stalks boosts sexual performance and gives a kick.

But doctors claim it triggers paranoia and hallucinations, might even cause mouth cancer and drives takers to suicide.

W T F??? Khat is a leafy plant containing cathinone, crack is a purified form of cocaine, they are not even close to being the same drug. If he wanted to say it's as bad as crack, that would be OK, a bit of hyperbole but his opinion- but he uses the words "a legal form of crack cocaine" twice in the article.

Worst news media drug misinformation I've read since the article that called Ecstasy a "mixture of mescaline and methamphetamine."
