Well, that wasn't the topic of the thread.

Clearly, if it is less than optimal it will matter at least in some areas, even if in others it won't.
It'll keep you from your maximum potential without you even being aware of what you're missing - because you'll accept the conclusions and sentiments of your mental conversations as deffinitive.
It doesn't make you a bad person.

I meant to add this:

When a whole minds thinks critically, it doesn't depend on what it already knows for the answer, but it does so being fully aware of its surroundings, and looks outside of itself.

When having a conversation with itself, its other source is itself (so it is depending on itself for the answer, thus nothing new is learned [hence a false sense of accomplishment]). This means mental growth is stopped, and the mind deteriorates over time.
If this is habitual, I believe it will lead to mental diseases when you get older.

With or without conversations with other people, a healthy mind is the tool needed to produce knowledge/awareness/insight.
Once regaining a whole mind, I've seen that having conversations with oneself isn't thinking in the true sense, it's more like playing out roles, or mental acting. The answers given are tailored to the personality presenting the dialog, and are never the full truth, but a limited perspective.

A united mind can very strongly think by itself and grow, but it operates as a whole, and doesn't tell itself the answers, but has them shown to itself through realizations as it becomes more aware, observant, of whatever its focus is.

Asking the question 'Why' of yourself can be a good habit, only make sure you don't settle for easy or smokescreen answers. If your answer doesn't help ground you back into reality, then pose the 'why' question to the answer you received. Dig and dig until you hit paydirt, and when you do, you can really feel it strong. It can literally send an adrenaline rush through your body, make your heart feel bright, and gives you permanent new or rediscovered strength.

Nope, being overly self-conscious to the point of anxiety is a neurosis.
Multiple personalities, conversations with oneself, are psychotic characteristics.

Talking to oneself does not constitute multiple personality disorder. Thinking often takes the form of dialogue. Verbalizing that dialogue is just thinking out loud. I don't think the OP meant that he has different personalities in his head, each with a mind of its own. Maybe I got the wrong impression.

I believe that this habitual thinking is destructive, but it is not psychotic.

Verbalized dialogue, in my experience, occurs when it is meant to provide added clairity to the thought - which presumes a less than perfectly clear mind, which presumes multiple frequencies of thought which aren't in harmony with each other.

I think split dialogue has to represent the stage of the mind, because it is the mind.
If a mind is unified, there is no exposition of question vs answer. The mind already fully knows what it is, where it's at, and what it wants. It furthers itself in continuous unified thought, not a break-up of thought into question/answer form.
It's the state of "I Am" (simply being), which requires alsolute harmony. I'd consider anything minimally less to be the fetus stages of psychosis as it impaires perception of reality - which is exactly what psychosis is.

The concept of an inner child acknowledges that there are various facets to ones personality....assuming this, one could have an "adult" who is critical or comforting...blaming or supportive. The "child" must insist on being "spoken" to kindly with respect in order for the facets to shine and be priceless like the facets of a diamond.
As I was grocery shopping last night I realized that I'd forgotten an important item. I heard myself saying, in my head, "Stupid"...so I said back..."Don't talk to me like that"...I then went, smiling, to where the item was and got off my own case. There are enough people in the world to get on your case.
So this theory encourages one to be kind to one's inner whatever, child, id, sensitive soul....to hopefully have a healthier relationship with oneself.
I talk to myself in the mirror and have done so since my youth...sooooo long ago...

I felt down the other day...even on my addarall I lost something...pobody's nerfect....and I sat down ready to give up. At first i felt totally ineffectual, ready to beat myself up for the misplacement, I asked "How can I do this on the meds?"

Then I told myself 'I'm okay...it's not a "ten"...just a lost item...then I added "I'll help you look". I got up again feeling like I had a supportive friend helping me look. I found an alternate choice, used that and when I got into bed...there was the 1st thing I was looking for in the folds of my blanket. I hadn't freaked out...blamed myself for being spaced out...everything worked out...and "we" like each other for having been a)supportive and b) open to receive the support.

Ahhh...self-help. A professional counselor taught me this stuff...

Ummm. I could never bring myself to talk if there was no one there to hear me say it. I can't talk to animals either. When I do talk, I talk very quietly and nervously.

My 'problem' is pretty much the opposite of yours. Why CAN'T I talk? I have tried to talk with no one there.. but I can't force the words out.. I just end up feeling really stupid and just kind of mumbling something almost inaudible or nothing at all.

I can't shout at all. I can't experess my emotions. I'm like a fucking robot.

I think talking to yourself is a very insecure reaction to not being able to be that show-off extrovert that you once were/want to be. I don't think it's normal at all. Extroverts piss me right off. Love you all though, peace etc etc.

But uhh.. I'm obviously just as insecure and messed up. I think my problem also comes from loneliness/not socialising much. I spent like 2 years staring at my bedroom wall and hardly leaving the house.

Thats exactly like my situation
I don't live in the main land and people here in the sister island are all damn 100 years backwards so from monday to friday I end up staying at home until I go visit my gf for the weekend :/

Although I do talk to myself sometimes, specially when I have a problem with someone, what should I say? how will she respond to that? and I end up mimicking a short conversation in my head, very very short though lol.

I also talk to myself when I'm trying to figure out how to better my life and self. In my mind I go like "you should pay more attention to that and stop being so lazy for fuks sake!". That's usually much longer than the invented conversations.
Hope I'm not turning my self into a skizzo instead of bettering my self

Assuming what you says here is all correct and not an exaggeration due your your feeling down on yourself then I'm pm-ing you about it.

This is serious stuff folks...talking to yourself cuz yer buzzed or clinically insane is not the same as being playful and/or working things out out loud.

The first is whatever it is...no insults to burned-out stoners here...I'll save that for another time... but seriously, the second is clinically proven as "NORMAL"! by all standard definitions of the term and us ADD people get into it big time sometimes. We're patient with ourselves where others are not...

That's NOT like the other young man who said he CAN'T talk at all...finds himself unable to communicate to the point where he has stayed indoors for lengths of time.

If you're talking to better your life and self I officially give you the "MIC" clean bill of mental health.

I talk to animals and babies who don't speak yet, this is important for them, especially humans...as they mimick what they hear to be able to speak ala Helen Keller and all deaf people...but she's a well known example.

I usually do it out of boredom/loneliness.

I think the only way to learn something from conversation is when its with other people. I can't really learn anything useful from myself, can I? No. That is impossible

You may not learn something from yourself but you can learn something about yourself..

You (meaning we all) can "take yourself to task" so why not "take yourself to learn" (something new) at the library or from others.

this isn't the orig.subject but I'll suggest here that you may want to join a club or something where you can practice verbal interaction and help eliminate the loneliness and boredom at the same time. Chess anyone? Bowling? Mushrooms?...I wish!
When you feel lonely, think of how I like you...
