Since pennies are copper plating over a shell of a much more reactive metal, you can expose the inner metal, submerge in acid, and leave only the copper!

I've been doing that for a long time. Sand one edge of a penny, throw in some vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. H2O2 catalyzes the reaction. If you have HCl, it'll go a lot faster. Pennies prior to 1965(?) are mostly copper so they won't work. They end up turning the solution blue, which I assume is Copper (II) acetate.

as an added bonus, it costs slightly more to make a penny than a penny is worth! you're taking money out of war spending every time you destroy one.

have to get pennies later than 1982... and fuck, I just use HCl. Then again I always have a bottle of it anyhow.

The reaction also releases a small amount of hydrogen gas, maybe try that with 30 pennies and collect the gas in a baloon. It makes for a big boom.

Dip a needle in some 30% H2O2 and poke the baloon with it :evil:

Meh, I'd just put the thing on the end of a meterstick with some foam earplugs in.

I'm sure that TOOL concert in LA did more damage than I'd get from the explosive luftballon

Yes, definately be careful if you do this. I suggest tying a long string to the balloon and let it float to the ceiling, light the string and back away.
