CB Radio Help - shit is confusing.

OK so I need a CB radio in this truck I have to get loaded at a quarry I goto to pick up rock and stuff. Anyways I bought this Midland 1000 Link so I was going to pickup an antenna today but then some guy I knew saw me with the antenna and he started talking about how I need to tune my radio with SWR meter or some crazy shit. I've been googling for a while and not turning up much can someone help explain this crazy madness? And if you can recommend a good antenna that would be great too.

*BUMPO* Somone must understand this shit I'm still lost on all this... from what I have researched so far a HIGH SWR can damage your cb radio and eventually burn it out... this shit is sooo confusing I wish we had a CB shop like they had in the old days to take it to.

Thanks some of that made a little more sense... I was hoping someone had some inside info that is in trucking or something and might say I don't need to adjust the antenna based on the SWR but I think that's too good to be true so I'll be buying a SWR meter and tuning my radio myself to prevent the SWR from damaging it.

Ok, here's how it works. Radios transmit energy at specific frequencies and every frequency has a corresponding wavelength. Radios' antenna's apparent wavelengths must correspond to those wavelengths. The closer the correspondence the less power is reflected back to the radio.

Since CB radios have 40 channels, tune your radio to the center channel (19 or 20), press the push to talk button, and observe your standing wave ratio (the amount of reflected power). Adjust the height of the antenna to minimize the standing wave ratio. If adjusting the antenna's height doesn't seem to have much of an impact, reposition your antenna because it might not have a good ground (the metal part of your vehicle is part of the antenna).
