Then it gives you satisfaction--you feel better having it done than having it sticking out there, awkwardly. There are a million words for it, but it's all the same concept.

That would be purely self-serving, though, not altruistic at all--the benefit for others would be accidental.

If you have the urge to do it, you're receiving a benefit from it, though it might be the smallest benefit imaginable. There was actually some philosophy professor who tried to quantify happiness, and he stated that the (arbitrary) basic unit of happiness was that received from pushing a pencil across one's desk or table, back and forth, back and forth. Yeah, it's not going to make you cream yourself, but... well, it does kind of make you happy. A very, very, very little bit. "Look what I can do! *push*

Yeah, it kinda~ seems like a semantics thing, or it can be taken that way....
I could word it differently, breaking it all down to the reasons....

Like fixing something that you notice bothering you....
The jar could seem "wrong", which makes you "feel wrong" just having experienced knowing that it is "wrong" (to you)....
And you could fix it out of "instinct" to make it not feel "wrong" anymore, thus making yourself not "feel wrong" about it....

But one could argue that it was fixed to make it feel "right", as opposed to feeling "not wrong".....

It is close to the "half full" vs "half empty" duality....
Just depends upon what side of the line your perspective drives you to....

Ha, you added that pencil pushing unit of happiness part in a :ninja: edit...!
(unless I just blindly didn't see all of your post)....

So on that basis, every moment of being alive would have some level of units of happiness, even in a depressed person....
Almost along the lines of thinking of the other thread about there being no cold, just levels of heat - above absolute zero....
If it applies to happiness as well, there is no "sad", only levels of happiness above "absolute zero" - in happiness units....

So then, everything and nothing would cause a person to "feel better"....(?)

Ehh, not really. Like I should've said, he wasn't exactly a genius, although his notion did get some play as an extension of Millsian utility.

Anyway, the point I was making is, if something just "seemed wrong" to you, fixing it wasn't instinct. It was a way to make things seem less wrong. Removing a negative is the same as adding a positive.

I would push the salsa back on the shelf because it may prevent a future accident. I push it back despite the fact that I won't have to clean it up if it does fall later. I even take some risk in pushing it back because the jar may be covered in flu germs or I may accidently push it off.

I agree, it's a matter of semantics. Some would claim that pushing the salsa back is ultimately a selfish act because preventing accidents over time allows society to run more smoothly, which in turn allows me to live a little better and have a better chance of passing on my genes to healthy, successful children.

I'm still stuck on basic philosophy here guys. They didn't teach it too much in Georgia's public schools.
My argument is that there is no good deed that that doesn't benefit the performer of the deed. He will always benefit in some way, either by feeling good about it or because people will remember his good deed and be thought upon positively for performing said deed.

How does one benefit from giving one's life for another human being?

It creates certain feelings of accomplishment / idea that one's being altruistic, the thought that one helps.
All of these feelings create a pleasure on a certain level. Personal benefit comes in many ways.
IMO, altruism is a myth.

By feeling really, really good about it. You know, for a split-second. Then you die. Most people do tend to think that death isn't the end, and whether they're mistaken or not, there is undeniably a thought process that says, "This really means I'm awesome. It justifies my whole existence up to this point." That thought may also lead to, "I get into The Good Place, and avoid Some Eternal Shithole."

I'm not saying it's a fair trade at all, but it is a benefit, as I said in my first post.

I don't think this is a solid criticism of altruism, but it is one that exists. Somehow people think that to have a benefit, even an emotional or otherwise-mental one, ruins the process of altruism. I'd say it reinforces the tendency of humans to commit altruistic acts, so it's a good thing, overall, that we enjoy being altruistic.

I think your definition of altruism is a little different from the "traditional" one. I agree with yours though
What I was trying to get at was that, in the exact therms in which altruism is being commonly understood, it doesn't exist.

Personally, I think altruism is a selfish thing as well, but I see it a bit differently. If you are altruistic in the sense of only thinking of others, then you are still operating in the duality of self and other. But if you transcend duality, you realize that you and the other are one, and that helping them is helping yourself.

Yes.
I think that this labeling "selfish" and "altruist" imply something categorical... for people who see everything in black and white. That kind of perception upon the world can leave marks and mess around with our minds, leaving people frustrated, confused or full of anger.
Nobody's totally selfish or altruistic, there are just points of reference which in my opinion are not to be taken ad litteram.

So, if someone died in an impromptu act of attempting to save someone else's life,
but died prematurely - (before the act was knowingly completed and successful),
how would one have time to have the delightfully selfish "I feel good about myself" celebration....?
There is nothing to feel good about unless they knew the outcome of their choices....?

If faced with something "on the spot", thinking of yourself as a hero to gain satisfaction in the moment is not what would be on your mind....
Once you realized the true overall perspective of the current situation, your adrenalin would be switched to the "on" position....
You would have a lot of other stuff racing thru your mind.....    No....?

I'll hold the door open for someone, it serves me no benefit. Same with slowing down to let someone merge onto the freeway. None of it serves me any benefit, but I do it without a thought. I think selfless acts are something this whole world is severely lacking.

Well he/she had the motivation to save somebody, it's still "feeling good". That thought that he/she can save someone made them have a state of well-being.
He died... he died...
It's not altruistic because nobody intends to die (accident of no accident), they intend to save. That what I think we should keep our focus on, in either case.

And... what does permanently dead mean?

See, now with stuff like this, it just becomes routine....
It's not something you think about, it's something you just have programmed in as a "it just needs to be done" program....
Once it is normal routine to just do things like this, you don't think about how you feel, it is just automatic - going thru the motions....
