Good deed without any benefit?

Are there any good deeds that someone can perform with no absolutely no benefit to themselves? I argue that there is no good deed someone can perform that doesn't benefit them. Either feeling good about themselves or if they die in the process they are remembered in a positive, thus they benefit.

If i give a dollar to a homeless person i'll never see again, unless you believe in god and what comes around goes around', then he got everything out of it and i attained nothing besides a sense of "good duty" out of myself. That which is purely subjective as i could also hand the dollar to him in spite.

Like i just said, that feeling good is merely subjective to a particular persons thoughts about his action, it is not a consistant.

If your debate supports that me having the opportunity to feel good leaves me with a good deed for myself as well as the homeless guy, then you also have to base what you said on the subjectivity of being able to do something for someone without being a benefit to themselves.

Simply put: it's purely subjective and since just handing a one dollar bill to a homeless person, who didn't work for it but merely begged for it, makes me feel kind of spiteful that i have to do someone else's doing. but at the same time i feel glad he won't have to eat out of a dumpster. So the answer is both yes and no.

An atheist committing some form of martyrdom, I guess. No afterlife, death prevents any reward. Still, in the time between committing the decent act resulting in their death and the death itself, they will have some emotional recognition of their own greatness, so it's not a "purely good deed" by that definition.

I don't know, this is an old one, but I don't never saw the point. Of course charity produces a positive benefit upon the giver--it's a socially-approved act, one everyone can agree is beneficial. As a result, the giver always gets some kind of emotional, if not material, reward.

The question really comes down to: "Does the reward equal the loss in greatness?" You know, net benefit, net loss. Even then, it doesn't seem that interesting of a point. It's basically just a criticism of charity as something that's not "100%, unadulterated selflessness"... and in general, there is always an exception to every principle, some way in which it can be called hypocritical, whether justly or not.

An 'altruistic' act cannot be analyzed purely from the perspective of the individual. While the act may not directly benefit the individual, it may benefit his family-community-society. Many people believe that a truly atruistic act does not exist, and a human sense of altruism comes from our genes. 'Altruism' aids propagation/evolution of the species and is therefore hardwired into our brains.

While walking down the isle of a store, and seeing a glass jar of salsa precariously sitting on the edge of the shelf,
you could push it back on the shelf without it being of benefit to you....

Doesn't that make it a good deed without benefit....?

Without material benefit, yes. But you feel like a better person for it, presumably.

Altruism exists. People make the argument that it doesn't because in some way or another, every altruistic act may benefit the individual, but in my mind that is not so much a sign that altruism is not real as that its definition should include that individual benefit.

I don't think the fact that it has a possible evolutionary basis makes it less real. If anything, that makes it a more notable and, in my mind, more noble phenomenon. It is proof that there is some original goodness to humanity--a fact that should be obvious, since humanity is that upon which we base our definition of goodness.
