Culturing edibles from tissue

I'd like to try and culture some edibles from tissue samples on agar. Please forgive my ignorance on the subject, but I have some questions.

(1) Can I use tissue from fresh, market mushrooms?
(2) I'm assuming I just put a wafer thin sliver of mushroom onto agar?

I'll go looking for some books on the subject. Any pointers to FAQs or Internet sites muchly appreciated.

Do buy TMC and GGMM.

But-yep,you can use a piece of a fresh mushroom.Unless you are fairly good at sterile technique,it is tricky to get a clean culture that way.Dipping some tissue in peroxide,then shredding a piece from inside that can help,as will peroxidated agar.

I've heard a few people saying that they tried to clone different mushrooms bought from the store with no success. Someone was saying that big producers use strains that dont reproduce easily
