how hard are college calculus classes?

ive been thinking lately of switching my major to physics, and then hopefully go into an education career.

the thing is, i love physics and really love the classes, but so far I have only take an intro lecture class and also a lab, so i havent had to do any crazy math yet.

i know to complete a physics major, you must complete calculus I-III.
i havent taken a math class since 11th grade, but im about to be a college sophomore. the last math was pre-cal, and that was mainly a bullshit class the i just got by in a.k.a didnt learn much

how hard is it to get back into intense math? i smoke a lot of weed but would be willing to cut back a lot for this. i just dont want to be burdened out the ass with a ton of work on the weekends all day and shit.

Calculus was pretty fun.. just find a way to enjoy it a bit and it gets fairly easy.

all depends upon your teacher.

I had a horrible professor one year, dropped it(calculus) and now i'm taking it over and it's so much easier with the better professor that actually gives a shit.

Ya, a thick accented/low talking/small writing polish professor tried to teach me and about 60 others linear algebra once.. It was the first class I failed :frown:

It was impossible to read his writing and he wouldnt ever stop and clarify what he wrote if a student couldnt make out some of his hieroglyphics. It wasnt out of ignorance, he just would never look away from the blackboard while he was "teaching". It didnt help that he spoke so softly also... He was a brilliant man face to face but one of the worst teachers Ive ever had.

A really bad prof can seriously screw you over more than you think.

To reiterate what has been said, all it takes is dedication through attending class and doing your assignments. It can even be done if you have a shitty professor if you try hard enough although Cracka does have an extremely valid point. Some review during the summer on the pre-cal/algebra rules would do you a lot of good since it has been a while since your last math class.

I personally had a tougher time with Physics courses than Calculus but YMMV as always. Just stick it out and you'll be fine, you don't have to stop smoking as long as you don't skip class to get stoned. Good luck.

In my AP Calc class in high school: I struggled through and got a C.

In my college Calc I class: I dozed off in every class and got an easy A.

calc I was very hard for me because i had a bad foreign teacher who couldnt really explain these new ideas she was trying to show us.


calc II was very hard because there are SOOOOO many different tests for convergence/divergence as well as soo many different complicated types of series', etc...you must do TONS of homework to get the memorization down.

calc III was very easy because it was more like geometry than anything else. it was like taking a step back after calc II and seein the big picture...finding the areas of three-dimensional shapes, etc.

then,
differential equations was very hard for me. It's basically algebra of algebraic functions with multiple orders and derivatives. fucked up stuff...it took me three tries to pass it.

i hate teachers from the math department. they just cant comprehend why a non math major doesnt get it.

i'm an engineering major, and if i take one more math class i can be a math-minor...but i hate math so much now that it just doesnt seem worth it to me.

It all depends on your major. I did pretty good in Calc class for non-mathematical majors (called "bonehead calc" :grin: ), but with a physics major, expect some hard-ass classes.
